I take it the author is super famous. I randomly came across this for free on Kindle and decided to give it ago.

The audible is done by Whil Wheaton.

I enjoyed it enough for a light fun read.

The book remains creative throughout. I think it started off funny and ended with a good sense of adventure.

However the middle felt quite a bit bogged down. Every character was written to be just the most sarcastic person ever. Which made everyone feel the same. This isn’t helped by the narration which is a bit odd. Not bad, just odd. Like the narrator is laughing at what he’s saying as he’s saying it

Overall though, it’s a fun big monster book

You are thinking of Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon by Matt Dinniman.

Kaiju Preservation Society is by John Scalzi.

I didnt care for the "author's note" at the end of Kaiju.
I dont want to hear left wing rants

IMO Scalzi now thinks he's funnier than he is. Kaiju and Redshirts were both just OK (though I know Redshirts had its fans). His more serious sci-fi - Old Man's War series, even Collapsing Empire series, were much better.
