Russia is already promoting the "Ukraine totally did it" line as they typically do.

The would-be assassin is a "Slovakian Far-Leftist," which in their political milieu means he's... pro-Russia? He released a statement mentioning Fico's suppression of the media and press (getting rid of national broadcaster RTVS for being too critical of Fico's government)...

But Fico is a Putin ally... and head of a Left-wing party, Smer (Socialist Democracy)... which made a coalition with the right-wing ultra-Nationalist Slovak National Party... ???

I'm just reminded of a guy from England I know who always says "don't try to understand British politics through your Yankee lens... it won't make sense. Even our right wing supports the National Health Service and strict gun control..." Each country is its own country with its own political spectrum, I guess...

EuroNews: "What do we know about Robert Fico's alleged shooter?"

Slovakian media has identified the shooter as 71-year-old Juraj Cintula, a self-described writer who previously worked as a security guard and is allegedly linked to pro-Russian group Slovacki branci.

Not sure why anyone would believe they would take it any faster than they did either one of those. Which, again, took multiple months and tons of losses in both cases. Yet they're gonna roll Kharkiv in a week? That's just not reality.

In a war of attrition the war is won by grinding the other side down until they lose their will to fight. This is what Putin and the Russians are attempting to do to the Ukrainians.

??Turkey helps russia sell oil, — Politico.

It is noted that from February 2023 to February 2024, Turkey increased its purchases from Russia by 105% compared to the previous year. During the same period, fuel exports from Turkey to the EU increased by 107%.

The scheme of Turkey and russia was built on the loopholes in the sanctions. Despite the fact that the EU banned the import of Russian oil in February 2023, there is permission to import "mixed" fuel. The study confirms that Moscow earned €3 billion per year from the scheme from only three ports.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 16 May 2024

Ukraine's economy remains resilient after two years of Russia's invasion. Despite attacks by Russia on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, it is likely that Ukraine will see real economic growth of around 3 per cent in 2024. This continues the trend of wartime recovery after Ukraine's economy contracted by around 29 per cent in 2022, followed by real economic growth of 5 per cent in 2023, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) improved the annual inflation forecast to 8.2 per cent for 2024, down from 8.6 per cent previously forecasted. Inflation in Ukraine fell to 3.2 per cent on an annualised basis in March 2024, reinforcing the trend of falling inflation levels from the peak of over 26 per cent in 2022. However, inflation is likely to rise in the second half of 2024. The NBU projects fading effects from last year's strong harvest, a continued recovery in consumption, and rising costs for businesses during the war.

Continued improvements in the economic conditions of Ukraine have almost certainly allowed the NBU to progressively lower its base interest rate. The NBU lowered the base interest rate to 13.5 per cent at the end of April 2024, down from 14.5 per cent set in March 2024, and below the wartime peak of 25 per cent.

How can this be. LW has assured us that Russia has cracked the code and long range artillery and missiles can't get through.

Ukrainian drones damage Bazalt enterprise facility in Tula, Russia – video
VALENTYNA ROMANENKO — Thursday, 16 May 2024, 11:50

Drones of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) damaged the production facilities of the Bazalt, Russian defence industry state enterprise, based in the city of Tula, on the night of 15-16 May.

Source: Ukrainska Pravda source in DIU

Quote: "A military facility in Tula was struck overnight into Thursday as a result of DIU’s planned operations. The facility directly manufactures military products for the war against Ukraine."

Details: Open-source intelligence monitoring has confirmed that the incident was captured by street surveillance cameras.

Russian media, on the other hand, claim that in Tula Oblast, the air defence system shot down two drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Note: Open sources indicate that Bazalt is a Russian defence facility focused on the development and supply of weapons and ammunition for the ground troops, the air force, and the navy.

Apart from its main division in Moscow, it includes a research and production unit in Krasnoarmeysk, Moscow Oblast, as well as production units in Tula and Kostroma oblasts.

That’s exactly what I’m talking about. They’re just orcs and not human beings that have been put in a horrible situation.

And I’m not accusing you specifically of this, these same people with a Ukraine flag in their bio will scream to the rooftops about genocide in Gaza while many hundreds of thousands on both sides of this war have died completely dwarfing that shite show.

But not one frick is given on how many Ukrainians and Russians have to die to the LARPers. For you it’s good that the Ukrainians are dying for their freedom (even though that’s basically a myth), and then you’ll blackmail the rest of the country saying if they don’t die then we’ll send in your children to go fight the war, and then somehow act like makes it morally justified.

Russia on the other hand is Mordor, Putin is Sauron, and the Russians are all orcs and thus deserve to die. Your mindset is evil.

Is this your way of saying Russia hasn't laid out any peace terms that aren't a complete Ukrainian surrender and then blaming Ukraine/the West for not just agreeing to it?

I feel relatively confident Putin would have taken a deal where Russia gets to keep Donbas and Crimea and access to the Black Sea and NATO simply fricks off and doesn’t add Ukraine to NATO.

And they probably will do it too, because Ukraine just can’t take on Russia themselves. The things they’re getting is no where near enough to expel Russia. They needed all these things years before Russia invaded. They need to be able to replace losses immediately, and they can’t.

Russia has the manpower and will to win a war of attrition. They don’t care about their own men’s lives, or having outdated equipment. They have the numbers of soldiers and don’t even have anything to worry about with that right now. The people of St. Petersburg and Moscow aren’t feeling the effects of the war, and those are the only people’s opinions who matter in Russia. Their best soldiers and groups aren’t being used much yet. They still have plenty of Chechens and rural Russians to use for this war. Plenty of peasants.

They can produce equipment and get it out on the battlefield, and can replace their losses faster than Ukraine can. Doesn’t matter if it isn’t on par with Western equipment, when it’s Ukrainians using the Western equipment. Russia can rely on themselves while Ukraine has to rely on other countries. Ukraine is in trouble. They don’t have enough to stop an aggressive Russian offensive that’s begun. Doesn’t matter if Russia could have issues with their military logistics in a year, because this war will be over by then. Russia will ensure it never gets to that point. They’re about to overwhelm and put too much pressure on Ukraine, for Ukraine to overcome. It’s about to be an ugly summer.

You need to help mediate this thing because everything I’ve read Russia wants Zelensky out and their hand picked govt. in.

They don’t want the West ti guarantee Ukraine’s security.

Putin wants control of Ukraine. That’s obvious.

Well if we led the negotiations, we would tell Putin “tough shite, do you want this deal or not?” The point is neither Putin nor Zelensky would be fully satisfied with the agreement, but that’s how successful agreements tend to work.

Biden should have made himself look like the bad guy, given some concessions to Putin and Zelensky while not meeting fully their demands. But because with the LARPers it’s all or nothing, they assume the same with Putin when he’s a fairly calculating individual.

I think that Trump will do this (as would RFK), and you better hope that Putin hasn’t taken over Kharkiv at that point.

Article on Ukraine's USV development.

Opinion: Ukraine’s naval drones are taking over the Black Sea
May 16, 2024 3:14 PM

Testing phases that would ordinarily take years are taking months or even weeks to complete. Prototypes are immediately tested on the battlefield, after which amendments are made, and the next prototype is sent into combat. The evolution is rapid, and the changes that come with each stage of development are drastic.

For example, the weight of the Sea Baby naval drone’s warhead increased from 108 kilograms to 850 kilograms between mid-2022 and the end of 2023. According to SBU spokesperson Artem Dekhtiarenko, in April, the Sea Baby was modernized to hit a target over 1,000 kilometers (621.4 miles) away, meaning the “SBU can reach a target almost anywhere in the Black Sea.”
