Have some black mildew/mold in a shower. Can this be cleaned, or is it bear to remove and redo the caulking?

Sometimes you can get it cleaned using bleach but be careful if you've used stuff like Comet or Ajax since if there's any of that residue, it can form chlorine gas that is very toxic and can get to you real quick.

I've used bleach to get the black spots out, but it doesn't always work. When that happens, I will cut out the silicone caulk with a razor knife and use a single razor blade scraper like used for cleaning windows after painting to get any still left on the wall panels, but take care to not scratch the panels.

Once the caulk is off, clean the area well and allow it to totally dry. Using a caulk gun and a tube of silicone caulk of your choice, replace the caulk to fill the corners. Have lots of paper towels on hand and a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol. Do one seam at a time with the caulk then lightly spray the seam with the alcohol and use your index finger to push the caulk into the crack and even it out. Wipe any excess on your finger on the paper towels.

Repeat until all seams are caulked. Then allow to dry before using the shower so the silicone can cure.

You can clean it superficially but it’ll come back. If you are up to removing it, use Clean Seal from sashco as a replacement. It’s highly effective against mold.

Gonna throw out Mold Armor also. I've been using that on almost everything lately. Works good.

I agree mold armor from Home Depot in the paint department is by far the best. I just used it in bathroom caulk and it did the job!

I've used both on things like my boat seats and there is definitely a difference. I think there are different formulations...I stick with the original.

Seems to be good at cleaning the marsh stains and funk out of my kayak also.

We recently had the same issue. I had tried just about everything to get it off, and had come to the conclusion that I will have to remove/re-caulk the whole shower stall. That was until some one suggested I try toilet bowl cleaner. I put it on, and let it sit for the day. The majority of it just washed off, the rest only took a little scrubbing.

I tried that for grout stains/yellowing, it maybe lightened it a shade, but was not difficult to do.

I have used this to remove mildew from multiple surfaces. Hasn’t failed yet. Just spray on and it does all the work.
