You might want to try Manchac pass. Cut shad or mullet on the bottom. Probably need 3-4oz weights. Fish any drop offs and near the train tracks. I think there’s a hole that goes from 30-90’. You might catch a striper or redfish as a bonus.
The Mississippi can be extremely dangerous, especially with a kid, and if you have a problem you likely won’t see another fishing boat out there to help. Between debris, barge wakes, sandbars, current, wing dams, deep anchoring, etc. there’s just too much that can go wrong very quickly.
