Learn to throw a cast net. It's one of the most important skills for catfishing.
He goes to the LSU lakes and catches shad with a cast net and takes them to Pigeon. That's the only bait he uses and he catches some really big channel cats.

I use a castnet all the time when inshore fishing. It's nice not having to buy bait when you want to live fish.

Then you're in good shape. Try to find and net large gizzard shad. Threadfin can work in a pinch as long as they're not real small.
That's te only bait I use here on Lake Texoma and I catch several 50+ pounders a year. I'd really like to break the Texas record *and former US record of 101.5 by a guide here Cody Mullenix. Believe me, I'm gong to try hard this winter.

That fish along with a few others were caught in the Mississippi River and transplanted. I had friend who lived in that subdivision, and we put those in there one night in February 2007 when the river was high very high. I love seeing these stories pop up every couple of years but it's been a while since the last. At the time the biggest was around 40 lbs.

Fish while letting jugs soak and put out some on rod and reel. Wait long enough will catch some.
Best time seems to be May-July but should catch some now.
All of this. We have hauled some monsters out of there pretty regularly on jugs. Plus bonus of catching some good eaters on rod n reel.

You might want to try Manchac pass. Cut shad or mullet on the bottom. Probably need 3-4oz weights. Fish any drop offs and near the train tracks. I think there’s a hole that goes from 30-90’. You might catch a striper or redfish as a bonus.
The Mississippi can be extremely dangerous, especially with a kid, and if you have a problem you likely won’t see another fishing boat out there to help. Between debris, barge wakes, sandbars, current, wing dams, deep anchoring, etc. there’s just too much that can go wrong very quickly.

The 2 best baits we have found are fresh mullet and fresh Asian carp for big catfish. You'll need to be good at throwing a cast net . The last time we went (about a month ago) we caught 6 over 30 in an hour.

You can always do well in Manchac around the bridge or South Pass. Cant go wrong using Soft Shell or cut mullet for bait.

Guys at work said they started dredging that area for the CO2 wells. Not sure what impact that’ll have on the fishing in the area.
I’ve heard lots of stories of people catching big ones just south of the grain elevators on the river.
