.35 whelen is a larger bore .30-06. It's the best choice. .350 legend if you want something with super low recoil.

Good luck. I’ve been looking for a 350 Legend and can’t find one near Shreveport/Bossier. I have a couple of places to check back with tomorrow and other than that it’s order one online and ship to an FFL.

The 45-70, 444 and 35 Whelan seem to be a little easier to find but by no means abundant.

I got it sighted in in 5 shots, but my shoulder hurt for a few days

The first year they were legal, I bought two H&R Handi-rifles and scopes in .45-70. One for my Dad and one for myself. Bought two boxes of shells and used one to sight in both rifles at the range.

I've hunted and shot rifles and shotguns my whole life. My shoulder hurt for days.

Single shot 12ga rifled slug gun has been my go to for the last few years. Unless i have the opportunity to shoot over 100 yards i grab it everytime even during regular season. The other good thing is ammo has been always pretty easy to come by

It’s not legal to use a crack barrel shotgun with a scope during primitive though. I almost went that route last year but realized it wasn’t legal. Should be but isn’t

LEGAL GEAR
Legal Gear for Primitive Firearms Season includes:
? Rifles or pistols, .44 caliber minimum, or shotguns 10 gauge or
smaller, all of which must load exclusively from the muzzle, use black powder or approved substitute only, take ball, shot, or bul- let projectile only, including saboted bullets. All of the above may be fitted with magnified scopes.

Single shot, breech loading rifles or single shot, breech loading pistols, .35 caliber or larger, having an exposed hammer that use metallic cartridges loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. All of the above may be fitted with magnified scopes.

? Single shot, breech loading shotguns, 10 gauge or smaller, having an exposed hammer, loaded with buckshot or slug.

The first two sections state scopes can be used on all. No stipulation for the shotgun.

It doesnt say it cant be fitted with a scope. Until its in writing that you specifically cannot, id argue its legal.

Good luck with that

I was about to pull the trigger on a 20 gauge crack barrel slug until that was pointed out to me

I don't know anything about this place, but found them while I was googling.

35 Whelen. Ammo can be hard to find but coming more available lately. Its the only rife I hunt with now.

There is ambiguity in the way the shotgun reg is written. As written, if the shotgun loads from the muzzle, it can be fitted with a scope. If it loads from the breech (your "crack barrel" or "break action") then the reg excludes the statement "all of the above may be fitted with a magnified scope".

I would not hunt primitive with a scoped crack barrel shotgun.

Ammo availability ought the be the biggest factor in selecting one of the .35 caliber or bigger rifles. Any of them will do the job. I shoot a .444 Marlin for primitive. It kicks, but not any worse than my 870 Remington 12 ga with the slug barrel. The cartridges are over 3 bucks apiece though.

I don’t know what question you asked or who you spoke with May have been a secretary at the front desk

You can have a scope on muzzle loading shotguns but not on a crack barrel

If you could it would be clearly stated like all the other stipulations

I mean, it doesn’t say you can’t use a scope, does it? Looks like it was added to the regs after the fact.

Actually, I just looked up the RS 56:116

quote:

(2) Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, during primitive firearms season any licensee may use a magnified scope on any weapon authorized for use during the primitive firearms season.

Best Louisiana primitive gun is a breech loading exposed hammer gun in 35 Whelen caliber. Whitetail killer easily point and shoot out to 250 yards if sighted in 2” high at 100yds. Can kill much further if you have adjustable turrets and range finder.

ETA: CVA, Thompson Center, H&R are all good brands.

35 Whelen is best, followed by 444 Marlin and 45-70 in no particular order. Both those big bores are 150-175 yard guns before the bullet drops off a cliff.

Quit being a candy arse.
When there is brown in your sight picture, recoil should be the last thing on your mind.
