I use chicken necks in my dock nets and large pogies in my traps when we don't have fresh trout or redfish carcasses. Is there anything better in traps?

pogies are best bait for crawfish, but not for crabs IMHO

chicken is good for nets or string lines, but fish is my go to bait for traps. i have used hard heads but its not as good as regular fish or chicken.

i will say, you should never bother with turkey wings or wing tips, they dont have much blood or scent to them so they dont attract the crabs very well.

Fish carcasses are easy to come by at cleaning tables by boat ramps and Seafood retailers.

I have a friend who keeps frozen carcasses in a trash bag in deep freezer year round to run crabs with

I've been baitn for almost 30 years now

Boxed pogies work ok but fish heads and carcasses work the best.

ETA

A pogie might last a couple hours in a trap. Pogies are soft.

I've ran traps multiple times over multiple days on one redfish head that kept the trap loaded each time I would pull it up every 12 hours or so.

It it illegal to use a redfish carcass in a crab trap or net fyi due to it being a gamefish. I think its a stupid law considering you harvested the fish legally and are utilizing all of the fish instead of just throwing it away.

If I don’t have trout heads, I like chicken parts. Leg quarters are pretty cheap

I've never heard you can't use redfish carcasses before, and just read through the regulations on the lwlf website. I didn't see any mention of it. Would appreciate if you could point to where that is listed.

So I was told that a few years ago and I didn't see any law on that. Just called the enforcement agency and they stated it is not illegal to use a redfish carcass.

he is wrong

you cant use whole or undersized game fish as bait

fish carcasses are fine to use but to avoid the risk of green jeans in a bad mood wanting to give you a hard time, its best to not put the skin you cut off in with it. that way he cant try to claim it was a whole fish

Any other kind of fish like croaker, pinfish, spots, ladyfish, etc.

When I was big into crabbing (Charleston, not LA) I would go by the shrimp docks and they always had bycatch they'd sell you for cents, on my way to go crabbing. The boat ramp was on the same creek as the shrimp boats so it was convenient. One of my greatest regrets in life was moving away from there. But I'm getting off topic now. And got to drinking a little early due being Irish and whatnot.

I prefer to use fish carcasses but if for some reason I don't have them I use pogies. Lots of time you can catch them with a cast net and fresh they last a LOT longer than frozen. I will cut a couple and leave the rest whole when I am using fresh caught.

Question for you guys that keep frozen fish for crab bait. How long do you keep the fish in the freezer and still catch lots of crabs with the bait? Does the bait "go bad" and if so, how long can you keep the bait?

Don't know about traps, always use beef spleen on string.

I am not sure I have ever kept it over a year. I freeze them in cylinder containers so a frozen block fits perfect in the crab trap. There is no easier way to do it, I pack the fish in them as I clean them at the table.

The best crab bait is cow spleen, aka “melt”.

It’s bloody, which is what crabs love.

Absolutely. I usually cut the fish into pieces after I fillet them. Then there is not way to know the size of anything.
