Why did the Russians choose a "ski ramp" for launching planes from their aircraft carrier?

Is there any advantage of this system over catapults for launching?

Would think it makes it hard to come in at all if needed from that side.

I'd assume not or the largest navy in the world would be doing it also

That'd be pretty fun to do a motor x jump off that thing.

Or, get a sick old-school bike with pegs and torture that ramp.

Partly about tech but mostly about the costs. These Russian designed carriers were built to show a presence and a number. They were never a threat to the US fleet and a big black smoke show. Exact same tech the Chinese are using to posterize.

give enough time for the pilot to punch out since that ship can't generate the speed to aid in takeoff.

They don’t have the advanced catapult technology we have. At least as reliable

BTW, our lovely government sold the next gen launcher system, EMALS, a couple years ago.

Its easier to build not better. They need more deck to launch. US can launch from forward cats while landing at same time if needed. US needs less “in the wind” than the others. Many more reasons like how complicated cats are and others didn’t want to invest in that technology.

I'll admit, I don't know shite about carriers, but how do they counterbalance the weight of the tower? I mean, that tower has to be heavy as frick.

Russian fighter pilots were getting too drunk to see where the end of the runway was and wouldn’t pull up fast enough. So they inverted it to give the pilots more room for error.

It's cheaper than using a catapult system. It's called a cope slope
