Starting Tuesday, Baton Rouge libraries will no longer charge fees for overdue items — including those that are already late and accruing fines.

It’s part of an effort to “reduce barriers for teens and adults that need the Library’s resources whenever and wherever they are,” officials said in a news release.

something about not being fair or racist ... it has to be coming.

quote:

Kirsten Edson, deputy director of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library. “The library also wants to reduce pain point interactions with the public and be a welcoming place where access to materials is equitable.”

there it is ...

quote:

An overdue bill notice will be sent on the 60th overdue day, requesting payment for the cost of the item and a $5 processing fee.

quote:

Around the 70th overdue day, a collection notice is sent in the patron’s name to the Parish Attorney’s Office for accounts totaling $35 or more. The Parish Attorney’s Office will send a letter to the patron requesting payment within 5 days.

because not imposing penalties will change behaviors, right?

It’s because they’re getting 200 million every month from the taxes they levied on south Baton Rouge

Friend,

When I was a teen, I borrowed a book by Hans Christian Andersen from Latter Memorial Library and forgot to return it. It ended up being a week late. Horrified that I would be arrested, when I returned it the librarian smiled at me. I think she could tell how repentant I was and she forgave my debt. I have never since been late on a library book.

For the skyscreamers, do you know what percentage of American children have borrowed books from a public library in the last year? Have you not seen what is happening in universities throughout our land? The American library is in crisis right now. Libraries are dumping books, replacing those hallowed aisles with open spaces and computer stalls. Sadly, this is a last-ditch effort to try to remove any barriers to borrowing physical books. Although the story will be fodder to the perpetually offended, it really is more a story of the decline of the library and the death of books than it is of the decline of personal responsibility.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Friend,

It would behoove you and the entire board if you refrained from using the Lord's holy name in vain. To answer your question, yes, I did. The cover of the book was quite scandalous, and I knew at the time I probably should not have borrowed the book. If you want to know more details, I recently wrote about it in my review of Disney's Little Mermaid on the Movie Board.

Bossier parish does this too but now they are limiting to 10 items per card for patrons who don’t live in the parish.

Apparently too many people not bothering to return things at all and not giving a crap about collection notices.

What does her political affiliation have to do with anything? Some of you will always find something to complain about. Must be a miserable existence

I'll bet all of my late fees that no one in this thread has used a library in over a year, and this news is not affecting any of you. Continue your faux-outrage

Sounds like they will still be imposing a fee and replacement payment. I don’t see a problem here at all.
