Seems like really low hanging fruit for the GOP congress with a lot of support from the GOP base. What would prevent the GOP congress to include some simple language in the next budget something to the effect of:

"Whereas, the DOJ has a tradition of not interfering in presidential elections.

Whereas, to avoid interference or the appearance of interference of the 2024 presidential election by the incumbent president appropriations for the DOJ shall not be used to prosecute presidential candidates.

Whereas, the scope of DOJ appropriations involves only investigations and indictments prior to the date of this bill and does not preclude future investigations or indictments surrounding presidential candidates.

Whereas, the timing of this DOJ appropriations measure shall commence on the date of this bill and end on January 20, 2025 or upon new DOJ appropriations prior to January 20, 2025."

its more likely they cant agree on anything at all and we are plunged into a world wide depression that lasts five years. by 2026 the membership of the Republican party in California is less than the Green party. the us house is blue for 24 years.
mccarthy is synonymous in dictionaries for Example of Peters Principle promotion who failed his big chance.

Great idea, but unlikely. The people in Congress who at least appear to be America first don't have the support to get anything meaningful done. All the committees and investigations have been great, but let's see how far they push it.

I will proclaim ignorance.

Can they defund particular DOJ cases and investigations, or must they just reduce/defund the DOJ as a whole?

Defunding Jack is real easy and really popular with the GOP base. IDK why any GOP politician wouldn't jump at the opportunity to gain political capital with their base on this issue. It's really easy and low hanging fruit.

Congress can specify exactly what, when, where and how to spend government money. That is their constitutional duty. They can absolutely carve out Jack Smith from the budget or any appropriations from prior investigations or indictments of any presidential candidate within a specified time frame.

You think they could pass that in the senate?

If it's a small part of that larger continuing resolution where all the politicians get their goodies as they normally do.

Why? The Republicans always talk big and deliver little. Plus, the senate would never agree to it with their majority.
