but the transfer portal and NIL have turned things totally upside down in terms of recruiting and general roster management.

But that's not who those guys are. That's the point.

Hiring who the players want is a tried and true recipe for disaster. That’s how you end up employing Clay Helton for 6 years.

Almost as bad as letting the fans bully you into not hiring someone

Feel like stoops is a pretty damn good coach. Kentucky got lucky here to keep him. Maybe he would not have worked at Texags.

Exactly. If he is truly being considered then A&M is fracked. Anyone with half brain can see that hiring a lifetime position coach as your fulltime head coach just because the players are begging for it is not the best plan for the long term success of your football program.

Yall talk about Auburn boosters, but apparently at A&M, all you gotta do is donate $100k and you get to run the football team.

Yeah a big reason that fricking Joe Alleva hired that POS Orgeron was the players voted.

Can't imagine coach with a bright future, such as Elko or Fisch, would be interested in stepping into this situation. One thing successful coaches have in common is control of the program and not allowing boosters to call the shots.

Look for this hire to be very underwhelming now.

But better than hiring an 11-year SEC East coach with mediocre results.

Stoops had as many 10-win seasons in his tenure as aTm had during the same period….while at UK. He would’ve been an upgrade.

I just said this in another thread … there’s a reason why he’s been at Kentucky for 11 years. He has a 35–55 conference record in the SEC East. Kentucky is 1-18 under Stoops against teams ranked in the top 10.

He’s done a nice job making UK football respectable, but attempting to rebrand him as a hidden coaching gem is a stretch.

Do the transfer portal threats change the power dynamic? Probably have to at least consider that…

UK’s previous 10-win season was 1977. He’s done way more with way less at UK.

Not for the long-term success of your program. You are considering hiring a position coach whose never even been a coordinator as your head coach because the player want him. C'mon man, you've seen how that story plays out.

There are plenty of A&M former students who understand that Stoops is a solid coach.

Myself included.

There’s more to the story than just that.

aTm is way too big of a program to elevate a DL coach, that would be disastrous and they are too smart to do that.

Oh, I hear you man. I was on board with the Stoops hire for those reasons.

But thinking about it and trying to piece together what went down.

Stoops with that Aggie defense would have been a great match. I’m glad aTm will have to hire a less proven option.
