I think only thing that would be impacted is the transfer school's admissions policies but overall I agree.

I know there’s tons of tampering, and many players know where they are going even before announcing they are transferring.
However, there are still a lot of players that legitimately don’t know where their next landing spot is when they decide to transfer.
If the transfer window didn’t open until sometime in early January, then that leaves them a couple of weeks to enter the portal, gauge interest, visit prospective schools, and enroll in time for the Spring semester.

I'm sorry it's either that or the transfer portal opens up after spring practice and final exams. That way you can get to your school of choice in plenty of time before August rolls around.

He's a back up QB that thinks he has a starting spot lined up for next year but rules say he has to transfer before the game, or at least not play in it, in January. Believes he will be a back up again next year and may get passed up by third string regardless.
Change the rule to allow kids to play in playoffs/bowls in January and still be eligible in the fall and this issue goes away immediately.
