Are boat trailers titled in Louisiana? I have a title for the boat but don't have one for the trailer.

I have a certified bill of sale that has the trailer on it. I had a company handle all of the registering back when I boat the boat, motor and trailer.

UPDATE: Yes, as mentioned trailers are titled in Louisiana. If there is a lien, they are held electronically by the state. When lien is paid off, bank sends notice to state to release title. I had received payoff notice from bank, but did not get the trailer title which led to my starting this thread.

Yes, boat trailers are titled.

It can turn into a huge pain if you buy a used boat. Often times the VIN labels will wash off and the trailer VIN can't be identified.

This is something I would have a nightmare about.

In LA, the trailer used to be the only thing titled. That's not the case any more.

I sold a boat and after seeing the hoops the buyer had to jump through it made my next boat purchase easy.

I bought a boat in Arkansas, that only came with a trailer title.

We itemized the trailer with VIN # and value, the motor with serial # and value and the boat with it's VIN# and value separately on a bill of sale with total cost broke down over the 3 different "parts".

Only paid taxes on the trailer at the DMV for plates. I sent it all to LDWF and got back three separate titles for the boat, motor and trailer.

Not a big deal if you get all your paperwork done right.

Example of paperwork screw up... If you get a bill of sale with only the total for all, you'll pay taxes on the total sale price to get plates for the trailer.

This is what I also did after getting advice from the OB.

Clyde I'm assume you made a typo.

You pay taxes on trailer with OMV when you get a plate. That also starts handles the title.

Wildlife and fisheries handles the boat and motor.

But in Alabama next time. You don’t need a title for a boat or a trailer. I would just make sure to get a bill of sale though.

In Louisiana on Mondays you can go to the ldwf main office in Baton Rouge and they will take care of the trailer and license plate also. One stop for everything makes it easier than dealing with omv.
