The writer/director who has already turned the negative reviews political.

Once again, another series I can't make it past halfway of the first episode of because of the obvious, time worn plot devices and the telegraphed jokes and being able to see every single thing coming from a mile away.

Sigh...thank god for YouTube.

Is that the same actor that portrayed an idiotic Hugh Freeze in The Blind Side?

I'm one of the biggest anti woke paranoid conspiracy theorists there is, for context. I thought the first episode was pretty solid. I went in fully expecting and maybe even trying to hate it, but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. Foster's character is believable. I dig the atmosphere and overall vibe. The black chick cop was a little annoying but not overly so. Unless following episodes are way different, I think it's going to be a fun ride. I'm in.

This- I hate woke BS for the sake of being woke. But I am enjoying this so far. I love the setting and I love the foreshadowing. CGI sucks- it reminds me of the deer in The Ring 2. As far as missing/murdered native american women in Alaska, it really is an issue- read up on it if you don't think so- I'm shocked mainstream Hollywood hasn't gone wild with it yet as a cause- must be the wrong shade of brown for them to be all in.

Count me as someone who is very anti-woke and traditional and annoyed by Hollywood antics. I shamed my wife into turning off the Today show because "they hate people like us and want to undermine our family" if that gives you any bonafides to my level of media hatred. That said, I didn't even think much about it until coming to this thread after Episode 1.

Honestly caught off guard because this place loves True Detective and I assumed most people would be amped up. Didn't even occur to me that there might be this level of backlash.

Now I'm worried I won't be able to watch without noticing every arguably woke angle

that's how i watch EVERYTHING these days, and i cant help it. but that said, even with my woke microscope, i didnt find too much to complain about with this first episode.

Yeah, the only glaring thing to me was "if this was a white girl..."

I'm interested in what the guy with half of a head whispered to the trooper in the flashback- I don't see where this has been mentioned in this thread.

Yeah, and honestly that type of stuff is in our culture so I don't really care if it's in a show.

Good entertainment should show people making those claims, because they're made all the time. Of course, an accurate show should probably include a solid dose of false or very disputable claims on the racial front, because that's reality too. I'm sure the disparate treatment angle in this show will come down squarely on the side of native women getting less attention, but I thought the way they set it up was fair enough ("uh, you were on the case and you didn't close it").

Hollywood should take cues from highly regarded shows/movies that portray these issues in their gritty, world-is-gray reality. Stuff like Training Day and The Wire come to mind. Both gave voice to claims of abuse/racism, they also sought to tell the story of how those prejudices get built up in my view. Here, shine a light on why native women get less attention than missing/murdered white women, which probably involves higher levels of substance abuse and bad relationships in their community and the public's jadedness as to the tragedies that befall them, etc. Leave it up to the viewer to determine if that's a valid consideration, racism, whatever.

I enjoyed ep 1, but as of this moment I don't believe it's going to be better than s3, much less s1.

Pretty good summary of how I felt

this is a nuance that i completely agree with. i have no problem with these discussions being part of the show because they are part of our every day lives. people DO make these claims constantly, so it makes sense that someone in the show would also make claims like that.

I want to give a shoutout to Jodi Foster for aging gracefully. Still looks, talks, and acts like herself.

Compare her to Bridgett Fonda (edit: I meant Jennifer Jason Leigh) in Fargo, who looks like the joker.

Or any movie Nicole Kidman's been in for the past 5 years.

The show would be a lot worse off without Foster. She's reminding me of why she has been such a star and reliable actor all these years.

My biggest issue with EP1 is it seemed heavily rooted in supernatural shite which IMO will make for a way less interesting season.

Have we come full circle from S1?

Because that was what made S1 so popular

S1 being rooted in the supernatural is not what made S1 so popular . That was just a lingering suspicion that most everybody never thought was actually a thing.

I'm guessing that you're thinking that Jennifer Jason Leigh in Fargo is Bridget Fonda after plastic surgery?

Fonda has famously left the Hollywood surgery/fitness lifestyle and is now a normal looking older woman who you'd never think was once a hot actress.

After the 1st or 2nd episode of s1 in realtime, without the benefit of hindsight, people absolutely were drawn to the supernatural atmosphere.

Regarding e1 of s4, not 100% sure how I feel about it, but there's some pretty wild shite going on.

You think Nicole Kidman has aged bad? I mean she is no Elizabeth Hurley or Jennifer Lopez when it comes to aging but she is still pretty for being 56.

I think he was referencing the joker face, which NK has started to prominently show.
