I've switched to the store brand colas. Taste isn't as good, but half the price.

I don't drink soda very often, I can't tell any difference in the taste.
We just keep some cans of the Piggly Wiggly brand Grape soda and Dr. Pig in the fridge.

It's far more popular in Northern states than Coke.

Pepsi may be more popular up north than it is in the south but Coke has double the market share in the US as a whole

That sounds right, my bad. They did this with the scamdemic. And stupid people keep paying. If people would close their wallets for a while, prices would fall. Let the restaurants close. Let the $30k civic rot on the lot, it’s ugly anyway. Let the $7 per bag of chips (I don’t buy chips anymore) and the $45 Chuck roast rot. It’s out of hand.

So are we just going to pretend food prices haven’t gone up like 20% since Biden took office? Is that what we’re doing now?

I wish it was only 20%

I don't really get this. Don't the stores just sell the brands at a margin and let the labels compete against each other? Unless the brands aren't moving because they are overpriced relative to their competition, how does it effect the merchant one way or the other? I'm sure there's a massive amount of nuance I'm missing. Anyone have some insight?

A few thoughts …

It makes the retailer look bad if the price is high. Consumer now believes the entire store is expensive.

This is good free advertising for the retailer.

That’s all a lie. Not who you spoke with, but manufacturers and suppliers. There is zero reason for these insane increases for everything, not just food. Just to be greedy and an opportunity to price gauge. I wish our gov would step in, and that’s saying a lot.

Let me tell you why this is an incorrect position.

If the money supply were steady, and every company started raising their prices by 50%, 100%, or more, those companies would suffer because there would not be enough money to buy their goods and profits would suffer. Demand would drop.

The only thing that drives inflation is having too much money chasing too few goods. It's that simple. The government increasing the money supply, and shutting down the economy, people now not wanting to work, remaining on the govt dole to produce nothing of value...that is your inflation driver.

ETA: Also, do you think that pretty much every company in every industry just decided at once to raise their prices excessively? Why didn't they just all do this ten years ago and profit then? There are market forces that have been triggered by our government and fed that are the reason this is happening.

This is a blessing in disguise imo. Americans are among the unhealthiest group in the world because we have quick and convenient access and a bad habit of consuming unhealthy drinks and snacks, due to lack of control. Let’s face it - Americans are lazy af. And people want to complain about prices. Here’s an idea: stop drinking sodas and these companies will drop the prices, and maybe discontinue their products altogether creating a healthier America.

The price of pork and chicken has jumped dramatically as well and we stopped stocking sparkling water in our house when the price jumped up to the same as coke products.

You’re ignorant. You think potato chip prices are high in the store but the cost of potatoes, oil, seasoning, plastic bags, boxes, parts for machines, soap and cleaning supplies for the plant, office expenses, fuel for transportation, etc. have NOT increased???? Then add on employee expenses, insurance, and health care on top of that.

Do you have any idea what goes into making a product? Everything you use to make the product has to be included in the price of the product you made.

That’s my point. Everyone took advantage. It shouldn’t cost more for any of this all of the sudden. All of rhe sudden everything costs more to make. I still think it’s an excuse.

No offense, but you're dense and have shown no understanding of basic economics.

Answer this question...why didn't all companies raise their prices a ton 3, 5, or 10 years ago? I mean, if they can just raise prices and automatically make more money, why not do it?

Didn't the corporate tax rate also jump like 10% or something along those lines? I remember Raggedy Ann was absolutely dumbfounded when someone informed her that the businesses would pass the extra costs from taxes onto the customer.
