re: When did we become QBU??

Your list contains some good quarterbacks. It was just a different time back then.

In the modern recruiting era, roughly correlated to the BCS era, here are the best QB prospects, by their profiles at the time of their recruitment, from Louisiana (not listing the two Mannings in that time period as it’s pretty clear no Manning was ever going to wear the purple and gold, and this is a discussion about LSU’s access to home grown talent at the position)

3. John David Booty
4. Walker Howard
5. Brandon Harris
6. Robert Lane
7. Lowell Narcisse
8. Dak Prescott
9. Jordan Jefferson
10. Lester Ricard

(Myles Brennan could basically be considered home grown for the purpose of the thread, and he would be probably ranked somewhere in that 8-10 range as a recruit)

The idea that LSU could have built a powerhouse program focused on the passing game with this list of home grown prospects over a 25 year period is kind of comical.

Dak is easily the most successful of the group, and he was barely even considered a QB prospect by any schools other than MSU until very late in the process.


It was clear then, and has been proven to be true to this day, that if LSU wanted to build a successful passing centered attack, we would have to recruit nationally at the quarterback position to do it.


All due respect to my guy Marcus Randall, but Jordan Jefferson has been the most successful LA raised QB for LSU of the modern era. Perilloux obviously would have taken this title pretty easily had he been able to stay in the program.

Every other QB that has had any sort of success in Baton Rouge has been brought in from outside of Louisiana.

If anyone can think of LA QB recruits that had success at the college level that I’m forgetting, please remind me


ETA: went back and looked at rankings, and I forgot three more recent recruits that were fairly highly rated prospects, as I don’t follow as closely as I used to.

Justin Rogers, Keytaon Thompson, and Eli Holstein.

Holstein was a blue chipper but obviously hasn’t done anything yet, and is now transferring.

The other two did little in college, with both ultimately transferring out of the schools they committed to, and KT switching to WR at UVA, where he did have some success.

Would have been interesting to see what KT could have done had Mullen stayed at MSU, as he flashed potential in the one year they were there together. Mullen likely saw a lot of the same things he saw in Dak that few others did coming out of high school.

Recognized as such in two articles in Sports Illustrated as I recall and still remember Bert’s greatest game in Tiger Stadium like it was yesterday even tho it’s been about 50 years: multiple touchdown passes to cousin Andy Hamilton in a 28-8 victory over Notre Dame. Far and away the loudest game in Tiger Stadium history even with a capacity at the time of just 70,000. SI ran a separate article on the stadium atmosphere called “The Noise”.
