I actually leave them homeless for a long time. And I go until 40-50 planks and then basically don't turn the sawpit back on again until way way later.

"Rich deposit"
I find that the berry rich deposit is the most beneficial for food. Especially if you unlock the double berry production. That way you can get like 250 berries per year.
Having a rich iron or clay deposit is amazing once you get deep mines, because then you basically have unlimited trading to bring in food. Though the trading system is pretty bad right now.

i do "rich deposit" for animals, then do the passive trapping and double the seggsy time
