-The MLB uses a 20-80 grading scale to evaluate each draft eligible player based on their skillset of 1) Power 2) Hitting 3) Speed 4) Fielding 5) Arm. Now because 60-70% of all MLB draft eligible prospects fall into the below-average to average skill set it’s not much to look at when previewing a standard collegiate team. To give viewers a better representation of how they stack up on the collegiate level what I’ve done the past few years is grade each player based on their current tools as they compare to other players at the collegiate level. What this does is expand the bell curve a bit and give a better representation of their respective strengths and weaknesses now rather than a projection for a MLB position.

I have this in the first post every year. I purposely do not as grade based on the true MLB scale. I try to rank the players on LSU’s team as they compare to average college athletes every year, because the goal of this thread is focused towards the collegiate season and not the MLB draft. There is no set in stone formula, these are my opinions.

I always welcome your opinion and always have. If this thread is bothering you that much on a daily basis do like others have done and ignore it.

The scale of talent at the college level is insanely large. If you included NAIA, Juco, D2…. Everyone on LSU’s team is near 80. But let’s say you just did D1… 80 should still be too rare to give a few every year.

Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to create this thread again this season, Adam.

It is always interesting and a good way to start the LSU baseball season.

You do a great job with it.

Thanks, Adam! Your previews always make the countdown to first pitch go by so much faster. I look forward to your preseason analysis every year.

Good luck to our Tigers as they begin their 2024 journey to Omaha.

I just found the game codes for the LSU games in Minute Maid (and about 50 other games). We will be able to view the statcast data in real time for the games played in MLB and many in MILB parks through Baseball Savant.

I'll post links in the game threads.

Awesome. Thanks in advance Project!

If we want to look into the future for LSU’s sake I hope he’s one of those players who sticks around because by his third and fourth year in a college program he’s going to be a real workhorse for whatever roster he’s on.

This. Trey is that guy you want hanging around until his senior year because you don’t win championships without people like him

Also, he might be the most athletic guy on the team

Has Neal seen any time at 2B this spring? If Pearson or a corner OF slot struggles do we see Neal get time at 2B?

I have not seen Neal at 2nd this spring in the scrimmages I've been to.

Koki Riley actually wrote an article about Neal this morning, I apologize for anyone it's behind a paywall.

LINK

To summarize it basically says he's working to improve his body to be ready to play "anywhere he's needed" but the story doesn't expand on how they actually make that happen.

Thanks again for the position write ups. Surprisingly Josh has looked smooth and played a more than adequate second so far this spring IMO. I know that can change as competition ramps up but he looks pretty good out there.

His speed and arm I believe are somewhat undervalued as he has enough range to cover and as yesterday's perfect throw to third after getting to the ball that got past first base illustrated, I think his arm is better than a casual observer gives him credit for.

Only fricking Ell and Broski come in Adam’s thread year after year and fricking shite on it. We enjoy Adam’s previews every season. Ell, you’re a gigantic piece of shite and your role is unwanted and fricking tiresome. I would say 90 percent of the board fricking hates you…and deservingly so.

My take is it's mainly for the uninformed readers and football fans of tRant. Most of your true baseball fans understand a lot of the team and players positive and negative attributes. It's nice for them that Adam highlights some of the freshman and new faces to the team that fans that don't follow as closely won't recognize.

I enjoy the read and discussion about his position evaluations but I'll be damned if we can ever seem to stay on topic with all the fricking flaming that goes on in these threads.

We can’t discuss his ratings? Isn’t that part of the topic? Why can this poster pop in out of nowhere attacking ell and then he gets banned for laughing it off? Who derailed the thread?

Whoa. Slow ya roll hoss. I didn't say any of this bullshite you're accusing me of. I'm not taking sides either way for or against ell's or anyone else's flaming. You are reading more into my posts than what is there.

In fact I believe I'm the only poster so far that has posted some substantive discussion about Adam's 2nd base update installment today. You guys need to knock off the unnecessary bullshite and stay on topic IMO.

Doge out!

It wasn’t specific to you. Ell is banned now. Because someone came in and made it about him and he laughs it off.

Where is your yearly preview Ell?
Its in an anchored 800 page thread. That was when this place was fun and people didn’t get so bitchy about a criticism or two. Adam knows half the point of this is to discuss his ratings otherwise he wouldn’t do them. Ell explained his position and the actual debate seemed to stop once it was shown that Adam is nowhere close to the standard. It was over. tigerbait made this about ell because he got upset.

Damn. Hate to hear anybody getting banned (except Magician2, Oweo, The Pirate Queer etc).

Not defending the ban at all, but ell had an opportunity to stay on topic or avoid this thread, but he chooses sometimes to do otherwise. Not necessarily blood on the other poster's hands IMO.

Still bitching and moaning about the assessment of Jones yesterday? Yall really need to turn the page. Everyone has an opportunity to throw their opinions out on here.

It makes for great discussion and builds anticipation and arguments that will likely be discussed the entire season IMO. But this only happens if we actually dissect the players' skills and not attack posters for their contributions to the discussion.
