Sounds like a range sensor/neutral safety switch, usually on the left side of the transmission.
Easy fix if that is the issue

Seems like those would be a constant problem though, and not just in reverse
Reverse puts a load on the motor. If the idle is off or dirty, it can cause a stall that neutral or drive wouldn’t.
As another poster mentioned - clean the air intake if you haven’t done it in a while. That would be a better step one before replacing the sensor.

Welp, I went to the man's house and checked out the truck.
It needed a pint of transmission fluid, other than that, it ran, drove and operated perfectly.
I drove it about ten miles down a hilly curvy road transmission shifting just like it should and the truck ran like a top.
He took it to a local service center and one of the clowns in there told him that the transmission was going out. Told him he should sell it for scrap.
I think I'm going to buy this truck. The paint is Sun faded and it has a couple of medium size dents on the side of the bed, but the interior and seat are in great shape Engine bay and underneath look great, clean as a whistle.
It's got a brand new starter, battery, wiper motor and tires. He wants 3 thousand bucks for it. Wish it was a 5 speed though.
Even the A/C worked great. Thanx for yall's input.

I think I know what happened:
This guy was always a white collared type, so he didn't get it that the mechanic was just joking him and telling him that he has a good truck at the same time.

Did you try turning it off and then back on?

How does a 30 year old truck only have 90k miles?
I work with an older guy who has a 1985 Camaro with only 600 miles on it. He bought it brand new, drove it home and parked it in his garage. He washes it every week by manually backing it out and pushing it back in when he's done. Very odd fella.

could it be backed up against a brick building??

OD cable was bad to come unhooked on those. I had to drive my ‘91 by the tach.

It's a Ford. It would be hard to put miles on something that's broke down all the time.

quote:Want to make a quick couple of hundred? I've got an old 1991 Dodge that was supposed to be my kid's first vehicle, but she is scared of the standard transmission. It has the Cummins engine, so in addition to having all of Dodge's boat-like dexterity, it also suffers from an extraordinarily loud powertrain. I mean it'll last forever--around 500k at this point--but it's an unwieldy beast for a first-time driver. So, I've been looking for a similar vintage in an automatic.

Remove and clean the throttle body intake manifold that might get it fixed."
Most likely to fix trouble-easy to do and costs a little B-12/ throttle body cleaner. I do not believe it's a transmission issue. I retired form being a mechanic three yrs ago I did it for forty years. I specialized in engine performance.
Start it and listen to it idle with the hood open . See if you hear a vacuum leak by chance. Just something free to check..
I also don't know if that truck is OBD compatible-it's close to the cut-off point. If it's an EEC3 system checking codes will be different than an OBD system. Good luck.

If I buy this one, it would be to use it myself.
It's kind of a nimble easy driving pickup, compared to my other stuff.
