The “best” DkS game is utterly predicated on what you are looking for out of the game. DkS1 has by far the best lore and the best interconnected map, but has somewhat clunky combat. DkS2 has the best PvP and the most interesting/unique combat and builds, but by far the worst world/map in the series, and enemy placement is… interesting, to say the least. DkS3 has the most polished combat, graphics, and systems, its map/world falls in the middle, and its lore is kinda meh.
Personally, I’ve beaten 1 7-8 times, 2 once, and 3 twice. But DkS1 is basically my meditation game now. So while it might be my “favorite” and I would say the peak “Dark Souls experience”, I would say 3 is the best “game” of the group. 2 is an acquired taste…
This is a good summary of something that is as subjective a topic as ranking games in the "series".
D1 = the interconnected map was mindblowing to me. By the time I started it, I had only played Demon Souls, where each world was one long linear run, and Elden Ring which was a huge open world. D1 was completely different than either of the 2.
D2 = was fun but nothing about it stood out to me at the time I played it.
D3 = felt the closest to Elden Ring's combat and graphincs, which to me is the pinnacle of the medieval-ish FS games in both categories, as it should be
