Looking to visit for a short trip (3-4 nights). Looking at Airbnb for stay. Can anyone recommend good restaurants. Any secret beaches or hikes you know of?

TIA

There public access to the beach at The Montage. I don't think many people go there, or it's not as crowded as the downtown public beach. Crystal Cove is a nice one as well. Try to get a reservation at The Beachcomber in Crystal Cove.

1000 Steps Beach isn't as secret as it used to be but is the prettiest beach in the area. When I lived out there you had to walk down a steep dirt and rock trail to get to the beach but now there are concrete steps.

Drive up to Top of the World for a great view if its not smoggy. There are trails/Fire Roads down into Aliso Woods Canyon from TOW.

If you want to make a 20-30 minute drive, Ronald Caspers Wilderness area has some good hiking in the mountains. There is Ortega Falls in the area that should look pretty nice with all the rain they've had.

Thanks all for the great info. Sounds like a good quick trip with beaches within the U.S.

Crystal cove shake shack

Crystal cove shake shack is worth a visit.

We used to live in the area and liked parking here parking by montage to walk around the beaches in front of the montage.

Definitely second the deck for lunch. Driftwood (next door) is great for dinner as well. Get a reservation and try to get access to sunset view.

Other food:

If a beer lover, pizza port san clemente.

Awesome Poke (closes early, bring cash)
Above poke place is in dana point.

180 blu at the ritz in dana point has one of the best sunset views above salt creek beach and has good drinks/fish tacos. 180 blu

Second the vote for South if Nick's.

South of Nick's and Nick's (they have a couple of locations spread between San clemente and laguna) used to offer free corkage. Definitely go for the great food, but free corkage is a no Brainer (used to be 1 bottle per 2 people is free). South if Nick's is Mexican and Nick's is more California/contemporary. Both excellent. If at regular "nicks" try the butter cake.

For tacos/breakfast, papa's and sancho's (numerous locations from huntington down to San clemente) are solid and will be better than anything you'll likely get outside of S. California.

If you venture down to San clemente, stop at hopa j's and order the man fries. They are cheese fries with hawaiian pulled pork thrown on top. Excellent for dinner and even better the next morning in a cast iron with some eggs.
