Yep, Protected Ranking. Basically when a player is injured they can use their ranking from when they were injured for 9 months or 9 events once they return from injury. Wild Cards and direct entry don't count against the 9 event limit.
To make things more complicated, if you "re-injure" yourself the clock restarts and you can continue to use the original PR. So what you see is a veteran player use a PR for a Masters or Slam, lose in the 1st round, get "reinjured" and save the PR for the next Masters or Slam.

Always wondered how they verify the injuries. I mean having surgery would be obvious but I’m sure you could milk the recovery process.
