Need Electric Help

Need help with a project. My son wants me to make the ghost footsteps for Halloween like in the Haunted Mansion for a decoration.
I had an idea to get a bunch of single gang boxes and connect them with flexible emt then put blank covers over them like this but single gang.
Inside I can cut out a footprint with some green cellophane so they would glow when lit. I was going to put them in the landscaping so it looks like ghosts are strolling thru.
The problem is I need a way to slow “chase” the lights so they light up sequentially so it looks like steps. I could go lazy and just buy programmable strings but that’s going to get expensive. How can I wire this so I can put an led in each gang and have them light sequentially?

Addressable LED strings would be the cheapest route.
Otherwise you'll need relays for each light plus a controller.

You might want to look into a PLC based system. Direct Automation offers several brands of brick based, and modular, that are specifically aimed at home automation. Programming is pretty straight forward if you understand ladder logic, and if not they also sell ladder logic courses, or there is always YouTube.
