Went out to dinner the other night and ordered a Macallan's on the rocks (sphere of ice). Dinner and service was outstanding but when I got the bill I noticed a 3.00 charge added to an already steep 16.00 charge for the scotch. Is this common? This wasn't in New Orleans but on the sleepy northshore. I get that bars and restaurants may pour a little more for neat or on the rocks than what's generally poured in a mixed drink but I feel like 16.00 has that covered? You’re most likely getting a 1.5 oz pour if you order something “neat” but 2 oz. if you get something on the rocks. So you’re paying for the slightly extra amount of booze.

I've seen it before and it is obnoxious. I don't like being nickle-dimed. I use cubes in my bourbon or rye and I think a lot of guys do, so why is this a mystery? Charge one price.

Stuff like this makes me think they had a consultant in recently that gave them some "revenue maximizing tips" or they just don't know how to run a business. The next step in my train of thougths is if they don't know how to run a business, do they know how to keep my food stored and prepared properly or am I going to get sick?

Not a good look.

This is a valid complaint that needs to be shared on online reviews. It’s ridiculous.

Did you ask the server about this? Was it on the cocktail menu?

Seems ridiculous on its face value

I have a friend of a friend in Jacksonville that’s sells clear ice (large spheres and cubes) to restaurants. I think he told me they sell for $0.75-$1.00 per, so my guess is whatever restaurant you went to might be buying them instead of making them and passing the cost (plus some) along to you.

It’s how restaurants charge for 2oz instead of 1.5oz . If you get scotch and soda, you get 1.5 oz; on the rocks, 2oz. The theory is having the glass not look empty. It’s not a good look for guests to see it that way. I’ve seen it in 100 restaurants like that. Usually shows as “ rocks” on computer. Obviously confusing on bill.

We charge extra for block ice, there is a lot of extra work to make that ice. No charge for cubes.

ETA, 1.5 oz pour for us regardless if it is neat, rocks or block ice.
