Wright was a better offensive player and rebounder. And while I don't think (initially) he was supposed to be the focal point of the offense (that was Cook, followed by Baker), he morphed into that role.
Bailey is being brought in to be a wing-defender first. Any scoring he gives you is probably a bit of a bonus. Wright had the most FG attempts on the team last year. I'd be surprised if Bailey even comes close to that.

List update 5/2/24:
- The list of guards/wings was down to Bailey and 3 others. With the addition of Bailey I've taken all of the other guards off of the list.
- Clemson forward RJ Godfrey has committed to Georgia
- Oklahoma St center Brandon Garrison has committed to Kentucky
- We've reached out to San Diego State 6'8 forward Elijah Saunders. Seems like an intriguing prospect but has a list of really good schools suiting him. LINK
All 12 scholarship spots have been filled but all signs point to us taking another player, most likely a big man, through an NIL package. So as of now our list is down to Carlton Linguard Jr. and Elijah Saunders. Should be seeing us reach out to some other big men soon.

LSU went very guard heavy in the transfer portal this go around, adding Jordan Sears, Cam Carter and Dji Bailey to the backcourt, all of whom bring something a little different. Sears is the true scoring guard, coming off a season where he averaged over 21 points a game and 4.5 assists.
Carter and Bailey are both long wings who can attack and finish at the basket but are much more defensive oriented players. Bailey was an anchor for a Richmond defense that was top 35 in the country and Carter was also a key piece to a Kansas State defense that was top 20 nationally.
"Through the transfer portal, able to add experience, winning players and I think we've been able to address a lot of needs as we look to next season. We've gotta be creative in how we get to the finish line. Recruiting has changed a great deal, especially in the spring and there are a lot of other factors besides identifying good players. There's a lot of financial factors that play in so being creative and getting to the best place we can with our roster," McMahon said.
From that last comment, LSU will need to be a bit more creative in potentially adding more talent to the roster. It's been public knowledge for a while now but this is the final year where LSU will be limited with a one scholarship reduction so as of now the roster is completely filled. But McMahon has said several times in the past and reiterated 'we're never done.'
Most will wonder about the depth in the frontcourt and it is a concern. But when looking deeper into the heights, LSU will have five players between 6-foot-8 and 6-foot-10 to compete in the post. The experience is where that group will be challenged as Fountain and Reed are the ones who have been through the SEC multiple seasons.

Ideally you can find a guy with height, length, AND solid rebounding ability. However, LSU does have good height/length. Reed, Fountain, Collins, Miller are all 6'9 plus. What they need though is a rebounder. While it helps, you don't have to be 6'10 to be a great frontcourt rebounder. Baker couldn't rebound worth a damn. Compare that with some of Wade's teams who were great rebounders even though the frontcourt was 6'6 (Williams), 6'7 (Days), 6'9 (Watford).
Give me the 6'8 guy who is going to grab 8 rpg and provide some physicality inside over the 6'11 who can't block shots or rebound, but can occasionally step out and hit a 3.

I agree, I do still think Chest could be that type of rebounder though.
Still blows my mind that we seemingly didn’t pursue Joe Charles and he was grabbing nine and a half a game.

I agree, I was more so referring to what I interpreted his intended role was. He was a bit thicker and more aggressive offensively. But initially I assumed his role was as a wing who could be used to exploit mismatches, slash and finish around the rim, but not necessarily facilitate the offense.

Perhaps. But the offensive numbers don't really suggest he's going to be relied on much on that end of the floor. Last year was the first time in 4 seasons he's scored more than 3 ppg. He only shot 32% from 3 on relatively few attempts and the FT number was really bad (57%). It doesn't do much good to have a guy attacking the rim who can't make FTs if/when he gets fouled.
I think it's pretty clear his role is going to be as a "stopper" on the defensive end to try to match other team's wings. Ward could be your best offensive player, but he has struggled defensively.
LSU needs defense. So it seems like a good pickup. But I wouldn't expect much on offense

All things considered this is the biggest thing to take away from this pickup. Though I would assume if collins can manage to not be a complete offensive liability, he is a pretty decent rim protector. Which makes a difference. If he has improved his defensive rebounding I think he should get decent playing time.

Chest IS that guy, he just needs experience. Collins too, if he can stay healthy. Our perimeter defense will be much improved with Carter and Bailey, and I think the offense will take care of itself, without putting too much burden on the freshmen.
I definitely see this as a top half of the SEC roster as it stands. If we do add one more as a walk on, a la Dean, that's lagniappe.

Kind of an off the radar signing. Then again, nearly all of LSU's basketball signings are off the radar because no one really covers it.
Best I can tell, he's 7'0 from the JUCO ranks. Purportedly he originally signed with Baylor, but was released from his LOI and chose LSU over Wisconsin, Oregon, Minnesota.
Assuming all of that is accurate, you would think he has some ability if Baylor wanted him and he was being pursued by other major conf. programs. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say LSU just found their starting Center. But you can't "teach" 7'0 and the minimal highlights out there seem to show he has some degree of athleticism as opposed to some seven footers who can barely get off the ground.
With that signing LSU is at 13, so it will be interesting to see who is the "walk on"?

Boyed will definitely help our frontcourt depth. If he could give us 10-12 minutes a game, and keep Collins and Reed more fresh, it'd be perfect.

Only one player signed has a 50% or better shooting percentage. The steals, assists and minutes are not impressive for guards.

Sears counting stats are off the chart. Averaging 21.6, 4.6, 4.5, and 1.3 in college is impressive. Not to mention in regards to efficiency he is an elite shooter and has good advanced stats as well... anyone who says otherwise is just a hater.

Well, I thought we'd be done with this thread until next offseason but I've just updated the list again. We now have the best available player in the portal, Coleman Hawkins, visiting campus on June 17th. A big personality but LSU is familiar with those. We also must be willing to throw some money around since we have no remaining scholarships 
His senior season stats: 12.1 PPG, 6.1 REB, 2.7 AST (45% FG, 36.9% 3PT)
He also states he wants to go somewhere he could enjoy football games.
