LSU did all the right things. Facilities, staff, gameday experience, NFL development. Everything that shoudl be important to a player is here. Add in a chance to play for championships.

This move by OU will bite them in the butt, but this is kinda what desperate programs do. OU will not sustain this type of cash but make no mistake there will be a new desperate hopeful program every year.

If a situation can run off one of the best coaches to ever coach, who built one of if not the best programs in recent CFB history, no one else can sustain it either.

Young good coaches will bolt for the NFL, older coaches will fade off into the sunset. All that will remain are middle of the road middle aged coaches who cant go anywhere else. The entire sport will suffer.

There is simply no way to pay players their asking price, maintain team loyalty and program support and keep getting blackmailed. CFB will suffer greatly because of this.

Sad to say but we are watching a sport die before our very eyes because of money

Same thing Bobby Burton said today. This recruitment was a shite show

quote:

At least twice on Thursday, Texas and at least one other college program were contacted by Damonic Williams' agent asking for "more".

Yes, that's a tried and true negotiating tactic. I don't blame an agent for trying, nor should you.

The response? Texas did not budge.

So Williams announced for OU last night.

**

That is portal recruiting for some in this day and age. It's partially what Nick Saban said drove him out of the game.

But the Williams situation is not the case for every player, every agent, or every family in recruiting.

And that's where I think Steve Sarkisian has it right.

Yes, NIL should be there. But it should be the last thing discussed, not the first.

I'm not so sure that was ever the case in the Williams recruitment, even from the very outset, and perhaps why the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze.

It cracks me up to see all the people talking about how bad this move will be for Oklahoma while simultaneously being mad that it happened.

If you actually believed that oklahoma (and/or any other school) was making a big mistake with their NIL deals, you'd be jumping for joy, not grumbling about it. If you think OU is messing up by paying williams what they're paying him, you should be rooting for it to continue happening, not wishing for NIL to calm down or go away. You think 2001 Billy Beane was hoping that other franchises would STOP overpaying for saves and stolen bases and batting average? Hell no - the fact that the richer franchises were overpaying was exactly what allowed him to assemble such great teams. If the richer teams (in our case, texas, oklahoma, miami, etc) wised up and started spending more intelligently, that would be *worse* for LSU, because they'd still have more $ and now they'd be spending it smarter.

Bottom line: If other teams are overpaying on the NIL market, that's great news for LSU, and we should want that to continue, so that we can exploit the resulting inefficiency. It makes no sense to wish for the inefficiency to go away.

(Also, I just want to add that it's absolutely hilarious to act like it's some moral outrage for a player to care about money more than things like facilities, staff, and gameday experience. I'm certain that the next time you turn down a six-figure pay bump because the other place has modern offices and a great holiday party, it will be the first.)

How much is a full ride scholarship worth at a major university? Don't tell me they are not being paid. The only solution is to give them a choice. Either the scholarship or the cash, not both. Let them make the "business decision".

I don't blame him. I have several friends that have coached various sports in college and majority of them left b/c of the chaos it has become.

I have told many people that LSU won the last college national championship. All other will be tainted with turning college to pro.

He hung up his whistle because he knew he’d be really good at it.

Therefore, it would be taxing on his mind and body.

So I’m kind of glad he’s gone.

The coaches are not the only thing to matter. Fans are going to get tired of here today-gone tomorrow players and take a lesser interenst in the sport at this level. If that happens then the money evaporates.

If the governing body of CFB whomever that may be down the road has to stabilize the rosters for fans to stay in tune.

When everyone can give recruits a Dodge Charger it's harder to stay ahead of the game.

Probably not. He probably retired because he was old. The new landscape was just something that an old man can’t adapt to. If he was ten years younger he would have figured it out.

Williams making more than everyone in OU football except Venables and more than the OU President and athletic director. Crazy times for a 9 month rental.

Scholarship limits killed Barry Switzer as HC. He couldn't stockpile tons of talent with 200 scholarships.

Transfer portal and NIL killed Saban. He can't win recruits with process and rings alone. He didn't like re-recruiting the same players over and over again.

Is he the best coach or has he always just had the best players?

He quit because he lost his built in advantage.
