In January, Andrew Marchand (then of the New York Post) reported that the NFL and ESPN were in “advanced talks” that could result in the NFL taking an equity stake in ESPN, and that would give ESPN control of NFL Media.

Nearly four months later, there’s a growing belief in industry circles that a deal is coming, as soon as next week.

As one industry insider put it, the agreement is “all but signed.”

That would help explain the NFL’s recent slash-and-burn approach to NFL Network. If ESPN is going to be taking over, why should the NFL renew contracts?

The league has been stripping original programming from NFL Network, starting with a nonsensical extended hiatus for its popular morning show and culminating in multiple reports that Total Access — the original and signature studio show — is being shut down for good.

The relationship between NFL Network and ESPN raises more questions than it answers, in multiple ways. Beyond the future programming of NFLN, there will be very real questions about ESPN’s independence when it comes to covering the league. If/when the NFL takes an equity stake in ESPN and ESPN takes charge of NFL Network, ESPN reporters will be as inherently compromised as NFL Network reporters — especially when it comes to topics that might make the league or its owners look bad.

Ok. It’s entertainment. It’s not the news.

Like their top news breaker sending a story to a team president to approve of before it's published?

This feels like it should raise antitrust issues

Does this “journalist” think that normal “news” is a self sustaining product? Or does he realize that it’s also paid for for advertising which can shape the message that is presented?

So that’s why ESPN is happily blowing up CFB. They need the money to be the NFL’s lapdog.

Have almost complete control of all NFL narratives. It is, after all, in court documents stated entertainment.

Any ESPN archives footage will be under NFL control. All skeletons will kindly stay in the NFL closet.

Disney earnings are next week, so an announcement would make sense.

This will suck.

NFL Network is decent no nonsense, just football.

ESPN is all nonsense and will ruin it, or just fold the NFLN all together.

Like was mentioned earlier, NFLN draft coverage is about 1000x better than ESPNs

It's NFL fans, like me, that have made this deal a necessity.

It's NFL fans, like me, that will make the next round of ESPN layoffs a necessity.

Yes, I'm that NFL fan.

I fill like CFB is going to somehow align itself with the NFL. The NFL has been believed to have a financial interest in CFB which has led to rumors of a CFB super league.

Guess I won't be watching the draft or the combine anymore if I have to watch it on ESPN.

During football season I watch Good Morning Football at least a couple of times a week. It was better when Kay Adams was there. I watched it more back then.

The league would lose their tax exempt status if they do this. Or did they already lose that?

I like NFL Network and have always enjoyed it as an alternative to ESPN’s NFL coverage. This is unfortunate news.

Let’s not forget either that ESPN has dipped into the gambling biz with ESPN Bet.

So that means the NFL will have “an equity stake” in a company that has a partnership with a betting app.

But that won’t affect the games at all.

Nothing to see here, folks…
