The Masters ratings were down even with the guys everyone cares about there. Professional golf has bigger issues than OWGR and majors. They need to figure out how to get back golf fans that are tired of all the money arguments and shitty product and have decided to go play the game on weekends instead.

Like Phil said in his tweet: people can act like they don’t care if guys like Gooch, Paul Casey, Oosthuizen are being left out of majors… what about when it’s Bryson, Cam Smith, Rahm?

Phil and his friends fracturing the game has done more to damage ratings than any invite or exemption Talor gooch gets.

Do I want to see them playing together? Of course

Will it impact me in any way if I don’t see Bryson at Augusta again? No.

Or maybe it’s the PGA Tour ban & OWGR decision to force guys to play golf a certain way

I mean you can do this one guy at a time until it finally matters. Cam Smith? Koepka? Niemann? Rahm? What about when Xander or Fleetwood are playing on LIV?

Leave those guys out & the asterisk is real

You misspelled Monahan.

The guy that, for years, told players they couldn’t have equity in the tour, couldn’t have elevated events, couldn’t get investors to form an LLC and increase purses, couldn’t pay players based on impact, couldn’t own their media rights, couldn’t take Saudi money because 9/11, etc. Yet here we are.

Gooch is a top 50 player. Hate LIV all you want but it should be easy enough to see he is very good or check data golf.

So no issue with the tournament get the best field they can get.

People also complain about Gooch “bitching” but he isn’t the one asking the questions in the interviews.

I think this move actually is a step towards the unification not away from it. If LIV shows a better path to majors more players will jump and force the tours hand.

The PGA extending this and hurting the PGA tour is interesting given the history of the tour breaking away from the PGA.

I think people complain about Gooch because he just whines and doesn’t really make an effort to qualify. He’s not playing in either a US Open qualifier or an Open Championship qualifier. If G Mac who has won a US Open will play in one, you should be willing to as well.

Even Nicklaus and the players of the 1970s had friction with the PGA.

Things change. Sometimes it’s a little more contentious.

Since LIV came on the scene, there have been changes on the PGA tour.

Would those changes have occurred without the friction?

Those changes basically bankrupted the tour. That is why they had to go and get outside investors. Not all change is good.

Good for the players.

I’ve yet to understand why any of this should make me happy as a fan of the game.

Would you be this happy for McDonald’s employees if they had friction and got their salaries raised to $50 an hour? Or would you be like “why do I care how much someone else makes? But it sure sucks my Big Mac is now $22”

ETA: that would be 11 additional LIV golfers (23 total) if we were using Data Golf rankings

Full field has been posted. 154 guys & 2 reserved spots for winners on two PGA Events this weekend

Additional LIV Golfers:

Dean Burmester
Lucas Herbert
Adrian Meronk

16 total

Not sure how Burmester makes it but not Oosthuizen.

ETA: I guess he has 3 wins compared to 2 for Oost, so that must be it. But Oost is ranked higher (125 OWGR + 32 Datagolf) than Burm (130 OWGR + 38 Datagolf).

I only said that the PGA has never been a friction free environment.

I don’t really watch unless it’s raining so IF they bankrupted it would not change my love of the game.

I just play golf. I don’t get into the politics and such. I’m not a LIV homer or a PGA Tour stalwart. I tuned in Sunday after I got home from the course. Felt bad for the kid who lost it at the last.

More people are making a living playing golf than ever before. I’m not one of them so how they divide the pie up does not matter to me.

I do enjoy going to the Masters. I also like watching shots on their app.

LIV paid out more for the top 4 this week than PGA. I guess they have money to burn. I’d leave my job for more money. If I want friendship and loyalty, I’ll get a dog.

Agreed

And as I fan I just wants what’s best for me.

...but would you still expect to have access to your old job whenever you felt like it? That is the rub for most people.

No.

It will work itself out or not.
AFL/NFL merged.
ABA/NBA merged.

This is just what many of the other sports went through years ago.

Maybe LIV gives up after 4 years. Maybe not.

All I know is I would not turn down 9 figures of guaranteed money- especially if I’m over 40.

neither would I

I also wouldn’t bitch and moan about clear repercussions for doing so and I certainly wouldn’t expect others random people to care I made more money

Nor would I, but I also wouldn't expect everyone to change their rules to benefit me.

Seems pretty childish of LIV to create a startup, herald it as non-conforming and revolutionary... and then blame decades-old precedents and organizations for not conforming or welcoming them, no?
