Fair assessment. Prior to the 80s the State of Florida had zero “major” programs. Within a decade it had 3. My guess is Miami soaked up all the attention in the 80s so no one noticed Florida was rising too until a big personality like Spurrier came in with an offense everyone wanted to see.

To say a recruiting scandal made people forget seems flawed. The 80s were the peak of NCAA cheating.

Spurrier took over in 1990 but had nothing on Bobby Bowden

Bowden was 8-5-1 against Spurrier.

I recall the "Cheatin' Charlie Pell" label that Florida owned for several years.
