Umbilical Hernia, Any of You Ever Had One?

I've had a persistent cough since having the flu back in March. After a good fit Saturday, I started feeling pain in the belly button and just above. This morning, I found the protrusion. Just a small, soft swollen spot at the top (inside) of the button.
I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow to get it checked.
Anyone ever had the surgery for this? How was recovery? I have a long summer of hiking and camping planned.

yes - I apparently had one for years, but never knew till i lost weight. I also learned you can get ingrown hairs that can get infected as well.
mine was small, they did a small incision and repaired it - no mesh. recovery was a few weeks of not doing much, and sight pain - I ended up not taking any pain meds from it.
basically the 1st week or so you hold a pillow against your stomach when coughing, sneezing and so on. no heavy lifting for a month, if i remember correctly.
it is really not too bad - depending on your pain tolerance - I get kidney Stones, so the pain from this was not too bad.

Umbilical hernia surgery was easy (had it December 2023). Saw Dr. Brakta in Shreveport, who uses the Davinci Robot. No pain issue - it was sore as if I had done more situps than normal. I took no pain killer. Went to work the next day.
The robot is the way to go. The scars are gone, and no one gives a shite if my old arse stomach has a scar anyway. There was no mesh.
ETA: I also take a high dose of blood thinner and I had no healing or bleeding issues.
ETA: SO had a big inguinal hernia repair with Dr. Brakta's robot. No problems and would have been no pain but she's slender with little fat and the fat absorbs the gas they use to inflate your stomach for the repair. So, she had a day or so of cramping because the gas wouldn't absorb quickly. But, no any incision pain and no scars.

I had surgery about a year and a half ago.
No pain, but had an outtie and didn’t enjoy look.
Recovery was more painful than I anticipated.
Sat in recliner for five days.
Was sore for another week.
Back to normal now, but I can definitely tell it’s a new belly button. Others can’t though.

I've had one and I let it go on for a couple years before I had surgery. It didn't bother me much but I decided not to let it get worse.
The surgery was outpatient and in the morning. I was out of the hospital by noon. But the drugs they gave me had me craving a Whopper and I kept letting the nurses and doctor know. Doctor told my wife as we were leaving to please go get that man a Whopper. This was 8 years ago and never had a problem with the hernia since. No lifting for a few days. Not even a gallon of milk

I had this surgery with mesh. Hurt like hell for three day after. could barely get off the couch. Feels like you did 800 sit ups and forgot to drink water after wards.

I’ve had one for over a decade and haven’t had any surgery or anything. Might get it checked out

Yes. I had it for 10 years before I got it fixed. The only reason I got it fixed is that I had an appendicitis and I asked if he could fix the hernia on the way out.
He said he would if he found it. He found it and then fixed it.

The surgery is done laparoscopically and you’ll be back to normal within a week or two. Pretty basic procedure.

My fifteen month old daughter has one. Dr. wants to wait until she is at least two before they fix it. I am pretty nervous about the whole thing. It's pretty big.

Yes. No big deal. A few stitches. Give it a week before doing any hiking.

I had umbilical hernia after a lap chole. Had it repaired at the same time my right inguinal hernia was repaired.
The surgery was great, couldn't be easier. The 1st few days of recovery sucked as I was out of pain meds and they screwed up the script on a Friday. Went 1st 3 days without any pain meds.
Rest of the recovery was cake. Now I have a ventral hernia of the mesentary fat I got from being sick during and after left inguinal hernia repair. It's towards your head above the belly button where they inserted the scope.

My husband did many years ago. Orthoscopic surgery wasn't bad .. was in hospital for a few hours and then home. Think itw as on a Friday. He went to mass on Sunday and just laid low. I remember he took pain meds for maybe two days because I didn't want him to hurt. Then I switched to Tylenol and he didn't even realize.
Worst part was no lifting for ~6 weeks ... his job requires a good bit of it but his employees handled all of it.
