I can say that without question, my children and my household have benefitted from the missus being a stay at home mom.

She was very successful in her profession, and returned to work after our first child, but less than a year after our 2nd was born, she said she wanted to stay home. It was tight, but we could swing it.

It's not for everyone and I am not saying that it's the only path, but if it can be done, it should.
