These movies are not marketed towards you. None of the people who they market these movies to have any idea who any of the people you are referencing are. When they bother to make a reference to something you like, it’s either coincidental, something the developers care about, or designed to make you make your kids watch it. Why would they bother to make a movie catering to your demographic when 95% of the people who will watch aren’t in your demographic?

Yeah, how is it working out for Disney telling people who grew up with them and loved their products to frick off? They managed to make a Buzz fricking Lightyear movie bomb, probably the most popular and iconic animated character created in my lifetime. That should be theoretically impossible to do.

Back in the day people grown and young alike would go to watch a movie in a theater knowing nothing but one word: Pixar. It was a near guarantee to be a masterpiece and a classic. Not anymore. Inside Out 2 may get some of these former fans back into the seats, but quite frankly it’s been since The Incredibles 2 anyone really had these thoughts about Pixar, and they haven’t made a truly great film since Coco.
