It was a 15 year old cat. I’m guessing it was time and SIL did this to help out the mom.
How old the cat was does not make a difference in the crime; and no the mom was not involved.
There’s a difference between killing grandma or letting her die peacefully from natural causes.
Will you be ok with your grandkids taking you in the back and killing you once you turn 80 years old? You’ll probably die soon anyway, right?

Your wife’s SILs sound insane - I’d stay away
Killing a cat is evil and terrible, and it’s probably just best to distance yourself, but it’s not the same as killing a human

It sounds like your wife needs to put boundaries and walls up, ASAP. Buckle in for a lifetime of this struggle, as her family sounds fairly toxic.
I hope you can both be on the same page here but now that you are growing your own family, you will have to put your mental health and safety above all else. You CAN cut out toxic people in your life, and in fact you should when it becomes necessary.
If your wife's brothers and parents are pushing her to "get over it" and still come to family functions, they are the problem. And will always be the problem. Good luck with this, it will always be sticky for you until you make the hard decisions you need to.

Have you communicated with the family at all about this? I think you should consider doing that and letting them know they are all blocked and gone due to this activity and their support of two sick women.
You and your wife should block them from all communications thereafter and see what happens.

It makes a difference if the Vet did this humanely to help end the suffering of a 15 yo cat. That’s what really happened, isn’t it?
