Back to Black (Amy Winehouse Biopic)

I looked but didn't see a thread on this. I get it that Rehab was a catchy tune and all, but is anyone else totally baffled on this alleged mystique of Amy Winehouse?
Yeah, yeah. She was talented and plagued by her demons. Do we really need a movie about it?
Not every dead musician needs a biopic. I said it.

I think it was more so a documentary about her wasting her talent. It was a great doc.
One of the best music docs out there is called "Searching for Sugarman" about a musician who no one really ever knew about.

I agree. Saw a blurb about it showing one of her performances where she was coked out of her mind. The caption was something like "Hollywood should be accountable for what they did to Amy"
Give me a break, young rockstar cant handle fame/money/drugs so somebody should pay!!

But if you're going to do a documentary, do a documentary. This isn't Bohemian Rhapsody.
Hell, it isn't even Rocketman. It's a heroin junkie with a beehive and one good song.

That entire album was good, but I agree we have too many music biopics with stories that aren't true. Just since 2015: Straight Out of Compton 2015, Rocketman 2019, Weird: the Al Yankovic Story 2022, Bohemian Rhapsody 2018, Elvis 2022, Respect 2021, Bob Marley: One Love 2024, All Eyes on Me 2017, Back to Black 2024.

I think she may have gotten cleanish before her death. Her brother said that bulimia contributed to her death. Although she was five times the limit I don't think she had massive amounts or any amounts of other drugs in her system.
If she would have gotten better another great record or two, did great shows, then maybe I would want to watch that biopic.
That album was fricking massive.

Count me in that number. To me, she was a drugged up, alcohol swilling mediocre singer but a world class skank.
I never got the appeal.
Maybe she was trying to channel her inner Janis Joplin, but failed miserably.

The "inner demons" trope about singers and comics is such bullshite. That's just something the entertainment industry keeps putting out to make themselves appear more deep and profound. I loved Farley, but he wasn't tortured by inner demons to the point of death. He was a fat guy with no self-discipline who liked to get drunk and high. And eat a lot. When Bill the plumber dies of too much alcohol we don't wax poetic about his internal turmoil that pushed him over the edge. But when a singer like Winehouse destroys herself it almost gets portrayed as a noble accomplishment. Fun fact: talented people are irresponsible losers, too.

It’s a gross idea and unwarranted and unnecessary. Just trying to make a buck off of her.
Also hear they blame a lot of her issues on some kind of motherhood angle.

Weird: the Al Yankovic Story 2022,
to be fair, this was highly promoted as parody and nothing but

The Compleat Al is your mockumentary that scratches that itch.

And I highly recommend it. Very funny!

one good song.
What kind of frickery is this? Rehab might have been the weakest song on an outstanding album. You Know I'm No Good, Back to Black, a blistering take on the R&B classic Me & Mr. Jones. Raw and raunchy R&B the way it used to be.

Yet another telling of "the deader they get, the better they were" trope.

I'll have to take your word for it. I couldn't have named a second song of hers if my life depended on it.

Take a lap bro. That whole album is mediocre.

She had chops but the whole singer who dies is definitely a bump for some. I preferred to watch clips of her not on stage or in music videos. She could belt it out right where she stood and didn't need someone to clean her voice up

Don't forget I Wanna Dance with Somebody from 2022.

Several publications consider it to be one of the best of all time: Rolling Stone #33 and Best Ever Albums 203. and The Guardian Best of the 21st Century.. I can see how you don't like it because of personal taste but it is widely considered to be a great album.
