What was the offer the Lakers were competing against?

That is EXACTLY what we do not want to be.

One of Herb or Trey would have to be on the table just to get Cleveland to negotiate

Then they can get a shittier deal elsewhere. It's that simple.

They are in the weak bargaining position. Very weak, in fact.

Mitchell is going to sign the extension and stay in Cleveland,

I still don't believe it will be that easy for CLE, unless Miami and both NY teams tell him they can't make it work directly (not in a tampering way, but a "find out what you can get" way).

They were competing against LeBron and the pressure he puts on front offices. He wasn’t going to let them sit on assets for another year.

With that said, the Cavs are going to get an offer from the Lakers of Reaves, JHS, DLo (whatever he’s worth if anything) or Rui, and 3 1sts.

Heat can go a combo of Herro, Jovic, Jaquez, Robinson, and 3 1sts (I think they may be able to get to 4 if you count them sending the player from this draft)

Nets can go Cam Johnson, Sharpe, Fin ey-Smith, and 5 1sts (mostly from the Durant trade).

So our baseline offer has to beat those. That most likely means BI, Dyson, and 3 1sts at least. I’d say that’s pretty decent leverage for the Cavs and a good at least starting point for a return on Mitchell. Hopefully Dmitch doesn’t limit his list

You say this like we don't have anything to gain by getting Mitchell.

Drawing the line for a top 15 dude at a high level role player only shows you were heger serious about wanting Mitchell from the start

That just means they had to make a trade. That has nothing to do with what they gave up vs what they were competing against.

As usual I was years ahead of Griff on this and no body on here wanted him then. Now everybody wants him with no extension in place? Hilarious.

Mitchell is the most overrated “star” player I can recall over the past 20 years. He’s legit one of the worst defenders I’ve seen in a long time and his offense is inefficient it’s not worth the being as bad as he is defensively. At least with guys like Trae Young or Dame, you know what they’re giving you offensively (both have made conference finals as lead guys to boot). Mitchell has had some very good Jazz teams up and down the roster. He got outplayed by Brunson this year in the playoffs.

Kinda funny, but this is almost exactly what’s being said in the Trey threads lol.,

You never overpay. Never. Don't let shiny object syndrome make you irrational. There will be more opportunities over the course of the careers of Herb/Trey.

The "you" was general, not shel.

I’m guessing it’s been a while now for everyone, but the Celtics were the leverage vs the Lakers. That and our pure anger and vocal refusal to send AD to LA. If this becomes a real thing in any way, I can promise you the Cavs would love to ship him here instead of these other teams.

You overpay for young superstars, every single time.

Well there are similarities, but 2 years changes a lot. The shine has worn off Trae bigly in that time. For some reason, not as much on DMitch.

But that is exactly what they were actually competing against. We can float out the soft offers Boston made, but nothing came close to what the Lakers actually offered. The AD trade is a 1.1 situation and not really comparable to anything because of the unique pressure LeBron puts on front offices.

But I feel like we are trying to say basically the same thing and are actually agreeing

The Lakers have a title after overpaying.

We thought the Bucks overpaid for Jrue at that time, they have a title too.

The Mavs didn't want to overpay for Brunson. That could have backfired big time if Kyrie didn't work out.

Minny overpaid for Gobert. They're taking the reigning champs to game 7 and look like a top 4 team in the league right now.

Yes you overpay for the best player.

Well probably because it’s the off-season and the best thing to do is discuss potential trades and guys that have the potential to come available, especially when a national reporter puts the Pels as one of the teams interested in said guy.

Also, we have nothing better to do

Did you read the thread? Go back and read the hot takes on Mitchell from posters on here. Pretty embarrassing now.

He got traded from the jazz for less than even I thought at the time.

And his value is less now. CLE is going to take a haircut on what they paid.

I've been saying that long before he became a potential option for us, too. That isn't hopium or NOLA-based thinking.

Did you just learn this phrase? You throw it around like a 10-year-old who just learned the F-word

I keep using it in the same example b/c the example keeps coming up

I was literally just paraphrasing/quoting an earlier comment, too

IIRC, it was mainly centered around future picks, Obaji, and Lauri Markkanen.

I’m just wondering what changed. I got 130+ downvotes for wanting to add Mitchell two years ago, and now everyone is ready to give up the farm for him? That many people were that wrong? And now everyone is ready to unload CJ and BI lol.
