This is actually further from the truth believe it or not. If you are wanting to grow your stream, you would be best to NOT stream a popular game. The standard rule is to not stream a game that is in the top 5 of the current streaming titles. So when Black Ops 3 drops, don't bother streaming it unless you are a Pro or already have a following. The chances of you getting a viewer over a pro are slim to none.
Meanwhile if you see that everyone is streaming Black Ops 3 and not many are streaming another just released game, fire it up and try your luck. Just remember that some if not most will come for gameplay, but they will stay for personality. If you do not interact with your viewers, they will get bored and go elsewhere.
As far as streaming via OBS, Xsplit, or consoles, it's personal preference really. There are nights where I stream straight from my PS4 and some nights i'll throw on OBS. I will NEVER use the built in Twitch App on Xbox One just because it is completely inferior to that of the PS4. Depending on the game, you are more liable to get a few more viewers streaming straight from the PS4 just because people watch streams on PS4 because it's easier than going upstairs to their computer and browsing through several thousand channels.
Overlays are extremely easy to use and they are saved as a .png file so that when you "add image" to your scene in OBS, it will easily transfer over. I'll most likely be streaming tonight and I will stream via OBS and I will show you how I have my page setup. Essentially all of my info (Twitter, PSN, etc.) is setup like a sportscenter broadcast. I have the tabs on the left that tell you what's coming up and every 30 seconds, the tabs will cycle and then the bottom has the information regarding the tab.
At the end of the day though, everything in your stream is up to you. There are some nights where my chat is just dead and I am cool with it. However, I will still stream and if someone asks a question I will chat with them as long as they hang around. Then there are other nights where I get 20-30 people just hanging out having a good time. Viewbotting is something that is frowned upon, but Twitch doesn't honestly care from what I have seen. I have never done it, but I have absolutely considered it.
