Much of "the north" doesn't have temps this extreme in an average winter.

I will definitely take living in the north with no heat. If I tried to live in the south without air conditioning, I'd never sleep again.

Electric blankets FTW.

You can always put more clothes or blankets on. There is only so much you can take off. Give me north without heat any day over south with no AC.

The majority of "cold weather deaths" in the USA are caused by heart attack from physical activity in the cold. I've always found it weird they categorize heart attack or pulmonary issues as cold "caused by cold"

The overwhelming number of deaths due to heat is directly relating to overheating.

Screw the North without heat. Suffering through sub zero weather without heat is hell compared to 100 without AC.

Spent a week in Quebec one February, and will never complain about hot weather ever again.

Another OT thread full of ignorance.

No heat in the winter in the north means no source of warmth at all, which not only could outright kill someone, but you'd have to deal with frozen water pipes and such.

No heat in the winter would be far worse than no a/c in the summer. FAR worse. It's not even a discussion.

Being from New Orleans and having been there for Katrina and in NJ for Sandy, having no AC after Katrina was miserable, having no heat after Sandy was not bad as it was cold and we had no heat. You could bundle up and it wasn't bad.
You can always bundle up but when it is miserably hot you can only take off so much clothes.

Now, if it was in the 20s or below for a few weeks, it might be tough unless I could use the fireplace for heat

Our ancestors came from Africa. We’re warm weather animals. Cold kills us.

I love how people think “cold” means 30 degrees. let the temp get down to 10 degrees and let’s see if blankets will save your arse.

I went all last summer without an air conditioning unit. Was hell, but I overcame.

This is a stupid scenario if we’re not allowed to build fires. The comparable system to AC is some form of electric or gas heat, not a fireplace.

If fires aren’t allowed, then it’s like “what would be tougher to survive: stubbing your toe or being shot in the head?” One is obviously more dangerous than the other & not comparable.

Simple: you can always put on an extra layer of clothing but naked is always the best you can do when it's hot as hell.

yeah, when I was in the army, I spent almost 2 months (middle of July to middle of September) in the desert with no a/c whatsoever. No permanent damage

Don't think it's particularly close either. Plenty of people live in hot climates without AC. Living in the north without heat might kill you.

Right. This isnt a question about fricking preference. One is deadly.

So would a fan or window AC unit be allowed in the heat?

ETA: either way dumb post with no criteria on what would be allowed to keep warm/cool. FWIW, staying warm via a good fireplace is way more comfortable then staying cool by a fan.

North by far. Don't need ac to survive.
