Looking to purchase a DJ setup for outdoor home parties. I don't need to be able to mix and scratch. I want the ability to hook up a MacBook laptop to a couple of tower speakers and shuffle through music playlists.
I'm looking for decent sound of course, but not necessarily the ability to blow my neighbors windows out.

A DJ usually costs $300-$400 for a few hours. I'm willing to double this cost since I'll be using this setup a few times per year.

Point me in the right direction.

JBL Eon

This would probably be more than enough. Buy a pair of stands to elevate the speakers a bit.

Looks like it may be what I need. I'll certainly keep it in mind.
Trying to not be too picky but does this thing have Bluetooth or a USB input? Or is it only the RCA jacks? How would this connect to a laptop? Do they even make USB-RCA cables?

You need a mixer.

Why do I "need" a mixer? This isn't asked in a shitty tone. Serious question. I just wanna hook up a laptop to some amplified speakers, maybe a wireless mic, and get some lights. I figured there must be some sort of program with an electronic EQ for sound adjustments. No?

a DJ mixes the sound by beat matching and knows how to blend in all types of music to keep the party moving with no gaps. Just getting a mixers won't help unless you plan to spend plenty of time to learn how to use the gear and stand there like a dork at your your own party. Why do you think DJs earn their money? So their hosts can mingle and not deal with it. You don't just set it on auto pilot. Sounds like you just need to create a mix from your own music and hit auto play.

Exactly. That's the plan. I'm not knocking DJ's or the money they make. I just don't wanna hire one three times a year. People are too drunk to notice anything special a DJ might do anyway. I just need a quality sound system to use a few times a year.

I already have a very nice system with outdoor speakers mounted on the house. But they point into the neighborhood and I'd rather not do that when I need to turn up the volume. I'd rather have something out in the yard pointing in the opposite direction.

Then I recommend some powered PA speakers from guitar center that you can set up back in the yard away from everything and pointed back towards your house: LINK using some tripod speaker stands, like these: LINK and a DJ Controller. This is the controller I'm getting my son for Christmas. Pioneer DDJ-SB2 Serato DJ Controller There are lots of great reviews on the controller.

After that, you need Headphones and a great wireless microphone and stand. I suggest the Shure SM58 Wireless setup and a flexible mic stand. This is great if you want to add a karaoke system later.

As a DJ I can say what you are asking is basically what speakers you need to go with you laptop any set from guitar center. As far as mixing and scratching sounds like this is something you might want to stay away from if you are not trying to be a DJ and just want to hit play on a playlist. Any DJ equipment will require tons of hours to learn which sounds like you are not interrested in..As other stated its a reason people hire us so they can mingal and entertain

A linear-array P.A. system that brings an unobstructed 10” bass reflex subwoofer with 6 - 2" drivers. The built-in 6-channel mixer provides a combination of XLR, 1/4", 3.5mm, RCA, and Bluetooth audio into a true all-in-one design that you can carry with one hand.

3.5mm is your normal headphone TRS cable (like on the bottom of most cell phones/Apple recent cell phone dongles, and laptops). You would plug this cable from your laptop's headphone port into the same port on the mixer or the RCA jacks (depending on if you got a 3.5-->3.5 or 3.5-->RCA cable)
it also has Bluetooth. It does not have USB- that is not a common feature on live audio gear. They do make USB sound cards, they will give you RCA or 3.5mm outs, usually.

I just like the JBL all-in-one aspect. It's right at the price he wants, does what he wants (and a little more), and usually I would recommend putting speakers on a stand, regardless of where they are turned, and finding a cable to go from a laptop into a speaker which is on a stand is not always easy. This takes care of that, stores all-in-one, and, if it's anything like previous series JBL Eon, rugged as hell with as good of a quality/price as you can find.

The mixer isn't necessary, but it's very nice to have, even with one source, no microphone.
