Honestly I think going up to the mountains would be a bad idea, even if it's seemingly on the dry side. 40" in the mountains will be catastrophic. Mudslides will wash out roads. Dams could be in trouble. Seeing what that kind of rain did to houston last year, I can't imagine that happening in a place with topography.
The idea is the wind is going to push moisture at the front of the mountains and squeeze out quite a bit of the rain. You note why you'd want to check the rainfall forecasts for your place of choice.

True. I guess my point was that roads could get washed out which could leave people stranded... you'd hope the local weather stations accurately depict the inland rainfall issue to people along to coast so they don't evacuate into a potentially worse hazard. People don't die from wind; people die when their car gets swept off a road by a river.

It's not a bad point to make. These are things you have to consider when doing an evac from your home.

Also, try Sears online. When I have trouble finding some things that are sold out, Sears is my secret weapon because no one shops there
Genius
Don’t get why Sears fell so hard. Used to be such a great place to find anything

Don't worry about the fine details of landfall where you are, just assume Cat 4 coming right at you.

HH getting ready to fly into Florence.

Does anyone know what happens with scheduled flights?
Example - I’m flying into CHS on Thurs night. Will airlines allow free cancellation if the airport will be closed?

Meanwhile in Hawaii.
Wasn’t it a thing that hurricanes never hit Hawaii? Two in one season is crazy.

Time to evacuate is tough to calculate.
We have family in Salisbury nc.
They are outside the eastern edge of the 20" area as predicted. 15"?

Oh just for the hell of it Helene is now a category 2 hurricane with 105 winds. No threat to land.

Navy ships off Virginia’s coast are getting set to sail out of the path of the powerful hurricane, one North Carolina university has canceled classes and people have begun stocking up on plywood, bottled water and other supplies even with Florence still far out at sea southeast of Bermuda.
People up and down the densely populated coast were told to be ready for the worst — and not just for a possible direct blow against the coast. They warned that Florence could slow or stall on or near shore, with some forecasting models showing it could unload a foot or two of rain in places, causing devastating inland flooding. Forecasters also warned of a rising threat of life-threatening storm surge, along with the damage of a hurricane’s high winds.
Red flags flying on beaches warned swimmers to stay out of waters as seas began kicking up. People rushed to get emergency kits ready, map out escape routes and fill sandbags and secure their homes.

I cant think of many areas able to support two feet of rain in a short time period.

UNCW Univ NC @ Wilmington cancelled all classes yesterday.

I frequent an area just north of Myrtle Beach. Getting from there to the interstate on a holiday weekend is near impossible.
I hope they start evacuations and contraflow early or there will be people trapped in their cars for this.

The furthest inland I've seen things was the overnight Euro.
