Flying into Anchorage and have a week in late August. Any suggestions on things that I definitely need to do from the OB? Thanks in advance.

Are you interested in fishing for salmon or halibut? That is a popular activity on the Kenai peninsula south of Anchorage, but I'm not sure how it is in August.

Went there in August 2009 Kenai Peninsula, drift and walk in fishing around Coopers Landing. It was a great trip and caught plenty of rainbows and dolly vaarden. If in season I would do something offshore for some variety from the trip we did. Seward is a good destination on the peninsula for that.

I think the red salmon run on the Kenai is in July. Soldotna has good halibut fishing.

if you have the $$$, fly out to Brooks Camp on in Katmai.

Hike at Hatcher Pass
Hike Slaughter Gulch at Cooper Landing
Have lunch at the top in Girdwood at Alyeska.

I will just add that rental car shortages are catching people off guard. Make sure you reserve something soon.

Any suggestions

Move your trip up at least a month. It typically starts getting cold and rainy there in August.

Denali? yeah... Anchorage? Not really until mid Sept.

You could get snow in Denali late August.

Hasn't happened in SE.

I always wonder why independent tourist travel to Anchorage vs Southeast. SE is much more spectacular than the Anchorage Bowl. I get going to the Kenai or Denali, but I'm still wondering why most people choose Anchorage as the point of exploration.

We went last August. Soldatna and Russian River campground were my favorite spots we visited.

Very jealous, my dad lived in Fairbanks in 70s. I loved summers in Alaska.

First of all, no snakes to worry about but mosquitoes are terrible, I mean middle of the damn swamp bad. And they are very aggressive, I have never been attacked by swarms of mosquitoes like that even in Louisiana and Florida. Bring mosquitoes head nets, sprays etc.

Fishing is spectacular. I did a very underrated northern pike trip in minto flats for my birthday one year in august and had a blast and caught several over 20 pounds. You fly in fish and fly out, or did back then. You want to go to Kenae peninsula, south of Anchorage and fish offshore some for halibut etc. We used to camp and catch grayling etc at McKinley National Park. (Now is Denali I think)

The whole state is freaking beautiful, I used to canoe on streams and lakes in clear spring water where u could see the bottom the whole time, stop the car to let caribou herds or stupid moose cross the road, watch bald Eagles snatch fish etc.

Bring bear spray on you always and understand what to do or not do, we just used 44 magnums, 357s for kids back then. One shot over the head and pray that does it.

Not much you can do with damn aliens, just enjoy the probes as much as possible if they grab you.

Did I mention I was jealous

The interior and Arctic is where it’s at. Driving the Dalton and Denali highways are two of the best road trips you can take. I have an old van converted to a camper and pull over over wherever I feel like staying. Grayling fishing is great too. They look like giant beta fish.

Midnight sun brewery and Simon & Seafort's restaurant, both very good. The brewery is fun.
