With Facebook rebranding itself to Meta to reflect the company's focus on building the metaverse, I thought we should have a dedicated thread to the Metaverse.

What is the Metaverse?

The Metaverse is the concept of a future iteration of the Internet, made up of persistent, shared, 3D virtual spaces linked into a perceived virtual universe. The metaverse in a broader sense may not only refer to virtual worlds, but Internet as a whole, including the entire spectrum of augmented reality. The metaverse is still in its infancy but has a lot of potential to change our lives. It can be seen as the ‘internet 2.0’, where people will get a sense of being part of a virtual world and can be quite disruptive from what is today the internet.

The metaverse has the potential to be a disruptive technology that will change the way we connect ourselves today, creating vast opportunities for several companies to profit from this creation. Indeed, the metaverse is not expected to be developed solely by one company, but rather a technology that is built through collaboration of different skills. According to Bloomberg, the metaverse’s market size is expected to grow to $800 billion dollars by the year 2024.

A Few Metaverse Focused Companies

Nvidia (NVDA): "The metaverse will become a platform that’s not tied to any one app or any single place — digital or real", explains Rev Lebaredian, vice president of simulation technology at NVIDIA. "And just as virtual places will be persistent, so will the objects and identities of those moving through them, allowing digital goods and identities to move from one virtual world to another, and even into our world, with augmented reality. Ultimately we’re talking about creating another reality, another world, that’s as rich as the real world,”

Facebook (FB): Facebook executives have been saying the metaverse could be the next big thing after the mobile internet. The company says that metaverse will be a massive virtual world that can be accessed in real-time by users who will be represented in the virtual space by their avatars.

Unity Software Inc (U): Unity is a technology company offering a leading platform for creating and operating interactive, real-time 2D and 3D content. This is used for several applications, such as mobile gaming or filmmaking, but also for augmented and virtual reality devices (AR/VR). Unity has good growth prospects in its current businesses, but its growth can truly explode with the metaverse. As the company has a leading platform for real-time 3D content that is used in AR/VR devices, it can benefit immensely from the development of the metaverse.

Tokens.com Corp (SMURF) Penny stock: Tokens.com co-owns Metaverse Group, one of the world’s first NFT based, virtual real estate blockchain companies. Through its growing digital asset inventory, Tokens.com provides public market investors with a simple and secure way to gain exposure to cryptocurrencies linked to DeFi and NFTs.

Roblox (RBLX)

Popular Metaverse Blockchain Companies

Decentraland (MANA): The virtual destination for digital assets. Buy and sell LAND, Estates, Avatar wearables and names in the Decentraland Marketplace: stocking the very best digital goods and paraphernalia backed by the ethereum blockchain. Mana is the cryptocurrency that can be expended on Decentraland. Mana is a virtual token that can be used to pay for virtual plots of land in Decentraland as well as other virtual goods and services.n.

The Sandbox (SAND): The Sandbox is a virtual world where players can play, build, own, and monetize their virtual experiences.

Metaverse ETFs

META: The Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF ("META ETF") is designed to offer investors exposure to the Metaverse by providing investment results that closely correspond, before fees and expenses, to the performance of the Ball Metaverse Index ("META Index").

Decentraland and Sandbox both shot op yesterday, I presume on the FB meta news. MANA up 66%, SAND up 33% in 24 hours.

Facebook Metaverse News

Facebook's Meta company wants control of the metaverse

Facebook is already laying claim to the metaverse by changing its name. In a presentation on Thursday (Oct. 28), CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined his vision for the metaverse, an immersive next-generation internet that relies heavily on virtual reality. Facebook will trade under the NASDAQ stock ticker symbol MVRS, rather than FB, starting on Dec. 1.

Facebook’s Metaverse Will Support NFTs

quote:

Facebook said Thursday the company’s metaverse will support non-fungible tokens (NFT) in a possible boost to the Ethereum protocol, where the digital collectibles format has thrived. “This will make it easier for people to sell Limited Edition digital objects like NFTs, display them in their digital spaces and even resell them to the next person securely,” Facebook Head of Metaverse Products Vishal Shah said.

This is going to be big. First page. Same folks laughing at this were the same ones laughing at crypto in 2016-2017.

Someone explain this like I'm five.

I thought this was simply a rebranding of the parent company to change the name as they continue to gobble up all other social media products

Zuck is dropping the Facebook name to separate himself from it as he expects future litigation and penalties due to the willful spread of misinformation and the resultant crimes associated with it.

He’s found a new way to bring together all the buzzwords that Gamers, Crypto people, Iraqi Dinar scammers and Pokémon card flippers like under one platform in hopes of monetizing their distrust of established investment routes and banking institutions.

It’s the reason NFTs are in a frenzy. Think online matrix type universe. They’re trying the next thing to get us more plugged into the IOT.

Like 15 years ago a friend gave me a copy of Snow Crash. I finally picked it up a couple years ago on a random rainy afternoon when I was bored. So awesome. I couldn't put it down.

What if half of the world doesn't give a frick about FB, Meta, or whatever?

I got rid of FB a year ago and probably know a dozen others who've done the same. Sounds like they are trying to rename the Titanic after it's already hit the iceberg.

....and with that said, I'm sure Meta will take over the universe and make an uncountable amount of money.
