Anybody got any recommendations for a sim set up I can teach my kid to drive a stick on. Finding a beater standard isn't really easy like it was. The car I learned on was a $500 hatchback. I figure the sim is going to be cheaper than my clutch... to at least get the basics down. I was going to go ahead and get the cockpit, wheel, pedals and shifter.

I'll move him to a real car soon enough.

It would be for an Xbox One, hopefully compatible with an X too.

I’ll be honest, if you’re going that frickin far with it, just buy a pc. You’ll be able to go much further with your investment

If you want to get a realistic feel spend a little extra on the thrustmaster shifter. Compatible with xbox.

The issue on an affordable sim rig is you don't get the "feel" of it all, specifically the clutch bite or ABS pedal vibration. Sure, you can get pedals that do all that, but you might as well buy a car at that point.

Thinking out loud here. Why not see if you can rent a manual transmission car and take him out to a parking lot for a few weekends. I know he couldn't drive the rental on the road because of his age, but as long as you don't say anything to the rental company I think you'd be fine tooling around a business park parking lot. I guess finding a manual rental would be the issue. I can't think of the last time I was given the option in the US.

I'd buy another car but insurance these days has gotten ridiculous. I was hoping he could just get the motions down to try to curve the learning curve a little more.

Honestly, a sim rig for that purpose isn't worth the cost. To get anything that would actually teach him how to drive a manual would be pretty expensive.

The logitech G series stuff is cheap but doesn't have any real feedback on the pedals so even if he mastered the motions it probably wouldn't translate to real life. Probably your best bet for your intended purpose.

The fanatec stuff is great but it starts to get pricey.

Mirroring another poster, PC is the way to go but I'm not familiar with any console racing simulators and how they are.

Now with all of that being said, if you think this would be a cool hobby:
-PC to run Iracing
-Fanatec Gear (pedals, direct drive, etc.)
-at least one extra monitor
-Racing seat with mounts

I sold mine after I had to go back to work after Covid and I miss it every day.

My kid got his license a while back and has been playing racing and airplane sim games for years. It will almost certainly help him learn. First time my boy drove a manual took him a couple of tries feeling out the clutch, but was good to go almost right out the box. Same with countersteering and drifting. He could immediately do it just like in the game on the gravel roads on our land.

He started out with some Logitech stuff, but saved up and got the Fanatec wheel and hydraulic pedals (not sure what brand). I have to say, those pedals feel very realistic.
