So the wife is making me nuts about the big yellow trash can in front of our house and I get it...its ugly and it sticks out.

My plan is fairly simple:
- Screen
- pad for trash can

I first looked to see what Lowe's offered and I liked this kit, but its way too much. $350 for the 'frame' and then another $100 or so for the 3 'panels'.

I'm thinking I can do something more custom with thinner slat openings:

- 2 4x4 posts
- pressure treated 1x4s for the 'slats'
- gravel, weed block net, pavers for the trash can to sit on.

Pros
- can make the slits between boards any width i want
- can make the screen as long as i want
- wood will 'age' and have the same patina as the existing fence in a couple years.

Cons
- i'll have to pretend to be a carpenter again
- its not a fancy screen with birds and plant silhouettes & shite

- I can run some tapcoms into a bracket to the brick to support the one 4x4 post that will be against the house, but i'm wondering if i need to pour concrete for the other one or if i can just dig a small hole and put a paver in it then secure the post to that and let the weight of all the 1x4 slats and the other post secured to the house do the work?

Thoughts? Too ugly? Other ideas? Is a one-sided wall adequate? I'm not ready to tackle a gate-like opening and a second side.

I don't want the trash can in the back yard because thats where we spend 99% of our time. This is the perfect location; albeit everyone sees it who drives by and the wife isn't having it.

Why not ask your wife that in person rather than have her respond to your thread?

I think your solution of a buried paver and letting the house support the weight should be able to support this, but how long will the slats be?

see the photo. i think maybe about half the distance of the fence in the background to the gate post...so anywhere from 6-8 feet. I'll need to put a marker on the ground and look from the street to see how well it is hidden as you drive past to get a good length idea.

I plan to make a screen like this or similar in the fall... do not need a full enclosure. One 4x4 post at one end, and a 2x4 or something secured to the brick on the other, with slats of some sort in between. Pretty basic.

LOL

is there anything in your life you don’t completely overthink? I’d have grabbed that pre-fab one and ran out the store

I'd actually build it the same style as the fence.
Something simple like these photos.

find some pallets, paint them white, add hinges if you want a swinging/closing door DIY project

oh there's got to be!

Let me build a spreadsheet of all the projects I've done and create a pivot table to factor in covid and I bet they'll be something.

I see a bigger issue behind the hose, that drain right over the vent to your crawlspace.

I looked at these panels today because of this thread because I want to screen my ac and generator. These things are about 1/4” thick and flimsy. I was not impressed.

Friend,

Have you considered a natural screen, such a hedge made out of Japanese yew? Not only would this be a cheaper and more environmentally friendly solution, such screens are far more aesthetically pleasing. Wood or masonary walls used to hide AC, gas and garbage cans looks very trailer park-like to me and look dated.

Three gallon yews run around $15 at big box stores. Local nurseries have larger yews, which will save a year or two in filling in. In the right conditions, the three gallon yews will be five feet tall and thick in three years. I would say you would need four or five if you are trying to hide only the garbage can with a two sided hedge. If you are only trying to hide one side, as your prefab kit would, two or three plants would suffice.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Friend,

That green brush is hydaneas that I didn't prune properly in the fall so they should also get pretty tall and provide some privacy but I think a wall made from wood will match the fence in the back and look appropriate and also cleanly carve out that space.

Hoft Solutions makes a 4ft kit that can span 6ft or less with two end posts. 180 for the posts and then whatever deck boards you want to throw in it.

Their 6ft posts are 260 for two.

not that i've noticed.

it generally lives in the garage but i'm working on a golf cart right now so it was banned to the outer-net.

eta just spent a whopping $60 or so to replace the hood lift, trunk lift and 2 convertible top storage lifts.

feel like an idiot for not thinking of this before and propping that shite up with a broom handle the last 2 years.
