Recruiting services are going to start getting kickbacks from negotiating families for giving a 5th star. Those extra stars are worth millions now.

They make you high profile. High profile = NIL bribes (I mean legal marketing deals because of your super duper image and likeness).

Coaches do not care about stars as much as the kids do and fans.

Good programs tend to trust their own evaluations.

I don't think coaches will adjust their evaluation that much but while many will criticize your take, I can assure you that it will have an impact outside of the P4. College football coaches are some of the most self-doubting, insecure individuals on the planet. They take great comfort in third party services to validate their recruiting decisions. Grown men fawning over a 15 year old because On3 labeled him a 4 star already because he's an early bloomer and more importantly, when most of the kids his age are not done developing.

I don't think LSU or Alabama etc. care as much but G5+ and for sure FCS are all about it. Those coaches are not that great at talent evaluation.

Makes me laugh seeing posts and headlines “former 5 star transferring to x university” when in reality they’re on their 4th year, haven’t done anything in the field, and would be treated as a 3 star or worse in hindsight… and yet this is breaking news… too much weight is placed on star rankings so I can the bribery incentive

You do realize that programs do their own evaluations, right?

I doubt BK even knows what On3 or 247 is. If he does know what they are I can promise you he isn't reading their player evals and comparing them to his.

Lol. Most of those “star evaluation” sites rank players by what coaches are interested in them, not the other way around.

Kylan Billiot is a WR that was ranked, what, a three star but I think he's going to be really good when Hankton polishes him a bit. The Tiger summer camps ALWAYS finds local gems.

They absolutely do look at recruiting rankings. After nearly 25 years of recruiting ranking data, draft data, and all pro data. These recruiting services have proven they, usually, very accurate at determining a players ceiling. Obviously there are busts from time to time, but they are the outliers. Alot of the recruiting scouts for on3, 247, rivals, and ESPN are ex nfl and college football scouts. They are really good at their job, but obviously they can't find every diamond in the rough or pick every hall of famer perfectly.

With that said, schools absolutely use them. But no school is offering a kid without watching their film and/or having them camp, and/or sending their own scouts to watch them in person.

You do know that coaches and recruiters look at film and how players doing camps, right. They don’t pay attention to stats

That’s fodder for idiots on boards like this.

Ok. But a lot of the recruiting stars are based on who is recruiting a player.

I'm sure the coaches don't use rankings as a determinate but they certainly are mindful of them and use them as validation or as data points. And even further, in this NIL world, they better be aware of them. You can bet the kids and their agents/handlers/trainers/parents(is there really any difference?)are using them as negotiation power.
As for pay for *s, in a business built on whimsical teenage boys, rumors, innuendo, scandal and millions of $, it would be the least surprising turn of events to take place. It's a business full of con men with no repercussions for being wrong. Big Sherm already opened the door to paid interviews, the obvious next step would be paid promotion(*s).
