I am looking to purchase a high quality camera set up and wanted to get some recommendations from the resident TD photographers.

What are your suggestions? Price range is around $1200.

Lenses matter more than the body. Any Nikon, Canon or Pentax entry level DSLR should do for you if you are just getting into this. Invest more in the good lenses

Suggestions?

I am looking at either a Rebel or the Canon 40D. I am a novice when it comes to lenses.

A Rebel would certainly be fine starting out and it'll likely be a few years before you're at the point where that body holds you back.

As far as lenses, what do you want to do?

Looking at moderately priced stuff, for general walkaround/portraiture look at the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. Sports/telephoto I'd suggest the Canon 70-300mm f/4-f5.6.

You should check out LINK / . Most, if not all, of your questions will be answered there.

Good suggestion.

Also the Nikon D40X or D60 with a 55mm-200mm
or 75mm-300mm lens would be an excellent choice.

I have the D40 with the 200mm lens, and I'm still able to get some good shots from the cheap seats...

I disagree, if you have a shitty camera and awesome lenses, you're still gonna have shitty photos.

I have a D40 and I think it's great. It even came with an alright lens. It ran me about 600 bucks including a 4 gig card and 2 year insurance plan.

The rebels are not shitty cameras.

Further, I'd suggest buying body only abd getting the lenses you want.

you put words in my mouth. Put it this way, I would invest in a great camera before I invest in great lenses. Take it fwiw.

Well, ill respectfully disagree. There is far greater variance in image quality from lenses than from even the entry level bodies produced by the big two. You're better off with a largely unnoticeable difference in resolution than you are with a wholly soft image as a result of having a cheap lens on a $3000 body.

$1200 isn't going to get you anywhere if you're trying to get a high quality sports setup. But with that said, A couple of my favorite pictures were taken with my Canon Rebel at the Supers last year, so you can get great shots with anything...you just don't get as many, as often.

I disagree about the camera before the lens opinion. First, a great lens will stay with you forever. Second, I only buy second hand, and lens depreciation is insignficant, while cameras depreciate like cars. So far I've sold 3 of my lenses, made a profit on two, and broke even on the third.

Ultimately, for $1200 I'd get a Canon 50D with the kit lens and the plastic fantastic (50mm f/1.8). When the funds present themselves, I'd add a 70-200 or the IS version for another $1100-1500, which is everyone's general purpose lens.

That combo is more than enough to satisfy any enthusiast.

Thanks Guys!!!

I was looking at the 50D. Can I get the camera and the 70-200 lens for $2,000 if I get the 50D body only? Where is best place to get the lens?

This is what I am thinking....

Canon 40D
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM

I think I can build it for under $1500. What do you all think?

I would suggest you go to Photgraphy-on-the.net and look through the "Sell" Forum for a used 30d or 40d. You will get a great price and its a great place to learn a few things. Its under the marketplace section. Its where I bought most of my camera gear.

Edited to fix link.
