After rewatching The Wire, the ending for Duquan was the most depressing for me

Spoiler alert for those who have not seen it
When I first saw the series, I always thought it was Wallace’s death was the saddest thing in the series but I felt real bad for Duquan. He was a kid who had nothing and came from nothing. All the kids made fun of him and he just wanted to have friends. He finally made friends, doing good in school, and lost everybody at the end of the series. Him lying to the teacher about needing the money to go back to school with both sides knowing it was a lie was sad to watch and seeing him become a drug addict was a sad ending for him.

Finished a rewatch last week and yeah the scene with him asking Prez for money is heartbreaking. Good kid with a hellacious upbringing that couldn't escape it.

Duke never had a chance. Randy’s situation towards the end isn’t much better. Imagine losing a good foster mom, trusting the police for them to ultimately fail you and then being put in a boys home like that with a reputation as a snitch.

Thats one of the main points of the show. Most of those kids never had much of a chance.
I wish there were more movies and tv that showed kids making it out of that cycle.

The school season(s) are underrated I think. The show's character of Baltimore couldn't have been told without it. It was so perfect for the series to demonstrate the plight and path of the other characters having come up through that system and city. It's an autobiographical account of sorts, 20+ years ago which continues today after 4 Presidencies and multiple shitty mayors.

Good thread. I agree with you. His ending was by far the saddest. Wasn't that bad a kid but you kind of knew it would end up being bad for him in the end.

The vicious cycle is the main point of the show. They worked so hard to bring down Barksdale, then Marlo steps up. They bring down Marlo, and now it’s Slim Charles’ turn.
Daniels gets his chance to make some “real change” in the PD, but then his past catches up to him. Hell, Valcheck becomes commissioner!
Duke is the next Bubbles. Chris is the next cold blooded mass murderer.
All the police work in the show didn’t amount to any change or improvements.
The gears keep turning, grinding them all up.

The show was generally sincere, even with liberties taken/sensationalism for some storylines. While it might be depressing, it is a reality for many.
In a way, the kids storyline showed how we get a range of outcomes. And, if you want some hopefulness, maybe Duquan becomes the Bubbles of the next generation.

fricking Namond. That’s what is so great about the show. Just shows that “the streets” aren’t always fair and sometimes the good ones get fricked while the bad ones catch a break. It’s brilliant television.
S4 is my #2 season (behind S1). It’s that good IMO. Ans Dukie’s arc was a total gut punch. He was a good kid and one of the only ones who was actually trying and had the smarts to make something of himself and get out. But the streets sucked him back in.
Randy’s was also tragic. But Dukie was one of the only real “purely good” kids. And he ended up becoming the next Bubbles.
Tragic.

I disagree that Namond was the "least deserving." His father was doing life in prison, and his mother essentially forced him to sling dope so she could sit out her arse, and keep up her lifestyle, and subjected him to serious mental abuse. He might have had more nice things at home than his friends, but that quality of life would only continue if he dealt drugs, as a 14 or 15 year old. You can say he was a coward, pussy, whatever, but he was really just a kid who wasn't cut out for thug life, but put on a facade because he was told that was who he was supposed to be.

For sure, but consider who his mom was. One of the most despicable bitches in tv history. And then his dad, a drug dealing murderer.
In the end he turns it around, and gets past being an entitled, douchebag, problem-child. Of course he caught a huge break with Colvin, but he doesn't get that break if he doesn't start acting right. He turned the corner when he really could have easily turned into a monster himself.

My favorite part of the whole series is when WeeBey sets Delonda straight about Bunny adopting Namond. The look on that evil bitch's face is so good.

I remember seeing a while back (probably on some aggregator site) that s4 is the most critically acclaimed.
