Just re-watched Heat (1995)

They simply don't make action movies anymore like they did in the 80s and 90s. And Heat is a peak crime/action 90s movie.
The only criticism I have is the movie length. I had to watch it in about 4 or 5 sittings, and while being a good, action packed movie, there are a few stretches where it gets a little slow.

The action is the juice.

There was a thread on this a couple of weeks ago. I watched it for the first time and enjoyed it, however, the De Niro romantic angle made no sense.

You can say that it didn’t work as a romantic pairing, but it absolutely makes sense went through this in that thread earlier but the entire premise and plot of that movie doesn’t work without that relationship

This is true, but it doesn't make the execution any less ridiculous. They hook up once, he doesn't call her back for a while, but when he does he asks her to go away to New Zealand with him?
Her: (paraphrasing) "You don't know anything about me."
Him: "I know enough."
This woman wasn't enough to catch your attention after consistently patronizing her shop, but now she's everything you ever wanted after getting your dick wet once? Then on her end, she agrees to go away, eventually realizes he's a killer, then still leaves with him? GTFO.

Anyone else notice that during the shoot out scene, Pacino runs for about three to four minutes before he even arrives at the scene?

Mann is great for films like this. He's a "no nonsense" type director. Probably the best "firearms handling" director of all time.

Can't take that criticism serious when you only have 40 minutes to watch something and you put on a long movie

Why not? How exactly did she affect the overall plot?

Because...

"Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner."
This created a love interest for De Niro and made the decision tougher, he also got too attached to the idea of revenge and trying to even the score before leaving town (blanking on the guy's name).

Remove that character and the movie ends with DeNiro asking the flight attendant if they have seltzer water on the way to Belize
The entire arc of De Niros character is that he is an absolutist to his principles in his job and the reason everyone else isn’t as good as he is at this job is because they compromise and they have something they selfishly keep that gets them screwed over whenever shite hits the fan
The romance is testing that. It’s pretty much the only tangible thing moving his plot and motivation forward in this story.
He doesn’t meet her and he doesn’t feel the need to take a job he knows is risky for a higher payout to pay for this dream retirement he’s made up for himself after pulling it off. He lashes out at her during this time to try to push her away but he can’t resist. The allure of everything he’s avoided his entire career is too much and he’s like a fly running into a big UV light
He doesn’t meet her and he tells the crew it’s too risky and they can take it without him but he’s laying low because his principles tell him to do that and nothing is challenging those principles.
they could not have put the subtext more up front with the “heat around the corner” line that deniro repeats multiple times and the title of the film gets its namesake from. At the end he literally has the heat around the corner and he has to put himself to the exact situation that he’s built his entire life on and he fails.
His ego and pride won, in the end he was proven right about what he was saying, he was just wrong that he was above that.
Again I have no disagreements if the issue you have is the execution, Robert deniro just isn’t that good in that type of role that requires romantic chemistry. But I just cannot let people pretend like that plot wasn’t the entire lynchpin of the plot or theme of the movie

Waingro, man. Never forget.

IIRC originally Mann had this idea for a TV show and think a lot of the extraneous plot points (Wanyegro the serial killer, step-daughter suicide attempt, ex-con working at restaurant) seem like they were meant to be stories fleshed out later.
I know they’ve done Heat a couple of times on the Rewatchables and it would definitely be great as a Netflix series.

Your assessment of the Neal/Edie romance being important for the plot is spot on except for one important detail. It wasn’t the romance that undid him, it was the lust for revenge against Waingro (sp?). Him and Edie are free and clear if he just keeps driving.

I just don't see it that way. The biggest "test" I saw was him wanting revenge on Waingro which had zero to do with his love interest.
Also wanting a final score with a big payout is something that happens in every movie. DeNiro allowing an unvetted Waingro on the armored truck job shows how he was already not as perfect and principled as you are alleging and that was before he met her. If he's willing to take that risk for the armored truck loot, then it's not too much of a stretch in my opinion to take a higher risk job for a much much higher payout

I always thought that his name was Wayne Gros.

Pretty sure I bought an HK91 because of this movie.
