As I saw Star Wars in the theater in '77, I've always loved this film. It was utterly amazing to me (granted, I was 8).
A lot of the luster has worn off, if you watch it on say Disney+ it really appears to show it's age. Doesn't look near as good as more modern movies.

I'm posting today, that's a bit deceptive.

I was able to get the UHD version of 4K77, which is basically a complete restoration. The guys involved were able to get ahold of almost all the prints, which is 35mm Technicolor prints (or slides, I'm unsure which) of each frame, that they then cleaned physically to restore as best they can, and then scanned and did digital corrections (color and other editting), to restore at a true 4k resolution. Let me point out, analog film can have higher "resolution" and sharpness than any digital, if it's processed and developed right. Professionals making a movie for 20th Century Fox did it the right way. You can far exceed even 4k, as film buffs know, and the resulting scan is as sharp as the resolution allows.

The attention to detail on the models can, and does, exceed any CGI rendering.. These guys understood how to photograph a miniature, and this is a tour de force on practical effects. I know people will argue it, but I believe your eye knows the difference between a real object and a computer-rendered 3d graphic. And even the landscape of the Death Star was real.

Watching this in the original restored version at UHD, with the soundtrack synched in 6 channel Dolby 5.1 from the laserdisc version, is stunning. It brings the magic back in a way you don't expect. If you haven't seen it in this format, you need to. It's a huge download, over 80gb, but it's worth it.

Don’t frick with me on this. Am I going to see the black boxes around the flying Tie-Fighters as God intended or did they “fix” that?

I have the despecialized trilogy on BR. I have read it's a better picture quality but the version you're looking at was made to mimic a theater experience in 1977, so it won't be as good as a modern BR version

I have the original trilogy on VHS. I need to find a way to get it converted to digital.

Just get the despecialized version. You can probably get it for like $10. It pops up on FBM pretty regularly.

The added NOOOO at the end of ROTJ is a far more egregious edit

I’ll never forget watching the original trilogy on VHS in a camper in the 90s. Core memories

No, and that was what got me interested in this way back when.

Harmy's despecialized version was an attempt to recreate the original, splicing things back together. Cuts from various versions, some upscaled, etc. And it's a great version, because it was pushing the orginal back to centerstage.

4K77 is a separate attempt, using 35mm Technicolor prints, all scanned natively at 4k and then formatted as such. It's the closest we can get, since the master film reels were not preserved well.

I did end up getting the DNR version (noise reduction), which removes a lot of the film grain, because that's what was recommended if you're going to view on a TV instead of a projection. It cleans it up. The 2.0 version is color-corrected and the maker says it's the final version of this effort. It's about as close as you can get to the original film. When you download it, the guy even says what to set your TV settings (and AV reciever settings etc) to, in order to not get things 'corrected' by your TV. It's meant to run on a 'blank' slate, and use the encoding provided.

I mentioned in the OP, your eye can tell things. I think that does apply here; when you look at things like the screen crawl, the logos, the text onscreen, colors are slightly different.
The blue text on 4K77 with

A long time ago in a galaxy far,
far away....

That actually brought chills to me. Call me crazy, but when I saw that (the upper right version), it triggered my memory and that "that's the correct one"

I'm not a big fan of the movies, have only seen the first three, but I too saw Star Wars in the theater in 1977.

I remember being pretty impressed with the size of the spaceship at the start.
