Obviously the entertainment can be tied to the plot but if something is “fun” does it bother you if there isn’t much of a plot?

Entertainment.

I'm watching to be entertained. Don't care how they get there

plot and story are different. Plot is the sequence of events that happen in the narrative, the story is usually the characters emotional arc & journey. Oppenheimer’s plot is about the creation of the nuclear bomb, the story is about a man coming to grips with the guilt of negatively changing the world forever.

But to answer your question, entertainment always wins out.

Completely depends on the day and what movie I feel like watching.

I don't need to read Earnest Hemingway on the screen or similarly watch The English Patient anymore....

Tarantino said JAWS is the best movie (not film) but he said movie of all-time....because of its entertainment value with such a simple story....a fricking shark terrifying everyone. Movies exist to be purely viscerally entertainment. Films (which are a different category) tend to strive to tell a point of view, a reflection, a philosophy...comment on the moment or history.

Eh....nowadays, just give me JAWS....I'm past film analysis.

This is the entire point of going to the movies and if more people understood this, movies like Dumb and Dumber would win Oscars and shite like that.

Tits. Tits are more important.

+1

It is like asking if I prefer steak or pizza. It is nice when you occasionally get both but depending on the day one or the other might be my preference.

entertainment or plot/story

Why would those be mutually exclusive?

Just depends on the movie.

22 Jump Street? Plot was irrelevant and those movies were fun as hell. Same with Bad Boys 2 (the most fun theater experience I've ever had).

Now, Hereditary? The Wailing? Heat? Margin Call?

Or mor extreme art house movies like Stalker? Seventh Seal? The Princess and the Warrior? Three Colors: Blue? The Holly Mountain? The Return? Entertainment is not the top priority.

Not a better way on the planet to tell someone you sniff your own farts than to lecture them on the difference between "movies" and "films."

Personally, movies are a sum of their ingredients. I don't go digging for plot holes but a forced story can feel like a shitty video game.

Well Tarantino, despite you might disliking his movies, probably is an Encyclopedia on movies and film...whom I was quoting.... So I guess,,according to you, he sniffs his own farts....and you posted that on a board dedicated to this art.

entertainment, but there needs to be some kind of plot otherwise what am I watching?

Avatar is a good example. Cool effect. cool to look at. Such a dumb tired played out plot.

which is why people saw it in theatres and never talked about it again.

Is there really a belief now that there isn't a distinction between movies and film?

A long-held distinction,, mind you. Not fart sniffing. Do you compare The Grapes of Wrath to Twilight? I mean are we now comparing the French New Wave with the Avengers? Or did Ingmar Bergman need CGI?

Movies are for mass consumption, which I kinda just prefer now.

Films are bending the art form. Watch....

There's important reasons to separate the two. One is an artist, the other a house painter.

I need to find a character I like and can cheer for.

The dark and depressing movies are not for me, and many of the dystompians are too dark.
