Have WSP and Phish gotten to clean with their music?

It seems like it is to polished and that is a really weird thing to say but it just does not give me the same vibes. Obviously Houser changed things and there is nothing wrong with what it is now it’s just almost to clean. Feel the same way with Phish especially listening back the show they released form 1998 on nugs this week.

Phish is playing better than ever right now…and I’ve been to 200+ shows.

I wouldn't say too clean, but the vibe is different for sure. they have to change over time or they become a parody of themselves. 1998 was 26 years ago, it was a different world back then. i think they try to mix in the old songs with new elements but it won't ever be the same as it was, they are not the same.

that said shows are better in many ways now too. try to go to a show if you can, it might not be your cup of tea but it might be the best time ever.

I may be an anomaly because I like both Panic and Phish, prefer Panic and have seen them way more but Phish is a helluva good show.

Panic has changed the most over the years for obvious reasons.

I Understand what you mean about the clean description. Panic has been doing 3 night runs almost exclusively after CV19. They kinda hit great grove back in 22 and were on fire..dialed in and rocking.

It seems like JB tries to sing pretty or save his voice the 1st night. By 2nd set night 2 he starts getting that worn in growl, and then the never miss a Sunday show tends to be a rocker and a gritty JB

Jimmy has a much different sound and can shred but his sound is not unique, doesn't have the tone variety like Mikey, which is why they were so popular (not that this means Im right..
My 1st show was in 89 Nick in Bham 300+ since with 75% from 89- to Oak Mountain 2002. I've seen every iteration of the band, from bars, frat house to huge venues, festivals and etc.)

They still put on a rocking show every night but they will throw down a rager every 3-5 shows.

I suggest anyone who in the past thought they were a hippy type jam band go check them out for at least 2 nights in a row, no night is the same and their catalog is huge so you need give them 2 nights .

They can still scare away the hippies (a long standing joke)

Not clean enough, as both still suck.

Houser Panic is my favorite band of all time. Everything since hasn’t been the same.

Phish are very talented but there is only a % of their music that I enjoy.

Goose and Billy Strings are where it’s at these days for me.

Are you saying they don’t make mistakes or stumble into off beat jams anymore?

I think bands that have been together as long as these have gotten very tight in their playing but there is still room for improvisation. I also think if they felt they lost that improvisation ability, they’d probably hang it up.

Are they committing the unpardonable sin of playing well-written songs? Oh the horror.

Yeah that kinda anarchical saying. They are almost playing too good now. Billy is all I am feeling currently that is new.

I think they have found the groove that works consistently every night. Saw all 3 Halloween shows in Nola, and if you don’t go to all 3, you’re going to miss something you don’t know when the next time you’ll see it. Don’t listen to phish as much but I love you never know what they are going to play.

Phish is playing the best since their hiatus but also fills in the voids with terrible new songs.

They've matured. Nobody is the same from 30+ years prior.

I’ve ever had the desire to see a Phish show.
I did see Widespread Panic at JazzFest and almost fell asleep while standing.

It was a festival set, to be expected. Panic still shivers your timbers on a 3-night heater in a cool city. I wouldn’t judge them too hard on a sleepy jazz fest set.

Sober Trey songwriting is bad. He can still rip it live, but most of the new studio stuff is just not good.

Panic should have called it quits once Mikey died. Sad to see what they’ve become.
